Trouble with password

Hello everyone. I was getting help with setup from the place where I bought my referb mac pro. To set up my email acct I had to choose a password. I typed one I often use and we moved on. I must have made an error because I can not do anything now that requires a pass word. I remember telling Ben [ the customer service guy at Macs 4 U dot com....Very good people to work with, great prices and free shipping, very competent packing as well]

I remember saying I wish `I could see what I typed cuz I'm terminally dyslexic!' they were about to close so we moved on. Bummer. I don't know of a way to redo the pass word. Change password needs the original password to begin. mine's thirteen characters. It would be a nice job for all those processors if I knew and code breaking trix.

Can anyone help? If you think I'm a cat burgler with a hot mac in my trunk I can wait till they open again on Monday, but I'd rather not.

Open the Keychain Access application (found in /Applications/Utilities - or use a Spotlight search to find it.) Under Category, click on Passwords. Scroll down until you see your e-mail account. Double-click on it. Check the Show Password box. It will ask you for you general log on password. Type it in and it will show you your specific mail password.

If it's your main user login password that's giving you grief, then there are ways to fix this, if it's just your mail password then try the method in the previous post.

Hello and thank you JohnDS. It' the log in password that needs to be changed. I was the first thing we did with the idea I could go back and change it later. But i typed it incorrectly. Thanks for not assuming I was a cat burglar. I used to do that but I ran out of kitty litter in a hurry.

I think I shall be in your debt for this little packet of info. Need to proceed with care but.......
now I can't use the link in JohnDS' reply which contained one of the ideas I tried, a rough reproduction would be opt restart to recovery drive > double click> Os X utilities>terminal > type resetpassword.....

I got lightly scolded by the guys a Macs4U over this and nearly lost my keychain app. I don't blame anyone for this. They said that route leads to a conflict of passwords between me as admin and the keychain access password. I still have all my key chain stuff on another drive in this mac. So all is not lost. I must accept some of the responsibility BUT I do realize I'm am orders of magnitude from NERDNESS. If only I had that chair they sat Neo in to upload EVERYTHING!! Short of that goal I called the guy a macs4U to explain what I was going to try. I didn't get a warning re the conflict, that came from the owner Wolfgang. I can probably clone it [ I know nothing of this yet ] and maybe import it. And delete or disable the one that came in this computer..... It's all a bit up in the air just now.

Some of you must know the junk/crap thats already in the pipline....... Glued in batteries!!! gab me with a greed meter!! that alone would have had people in the streets 50 years ago. Basically, it is the same as Option 1 in the link I posted.

It is true that changing the admin/login password using these methods leaves you with a login password and a different Keychain password, but if you have forgotten the login password anyway, you have effectively lost access to the Keychain already... so where is the harm in resetting the login password. You are no worse off than you were before.

IIRC, there was some chance of importing the keychain that is working from the other hard drive. I haven't had time to get back with them yet and I'm kind of hoping to resolve it on my own. However, that will take some extensive reading and searching on my part. There is always the change of finding a solutioin here as well. There are a lot of bright people here. The answer could already be in some of the suggestions in this thread. Not being a nerd I sometimes can't evaluate the results of following some of them. But that is my shortcoming not the people helping. Btw I just tried the link JohnDS posted and it worked this time. Thanks everyone. Going to subscribe to that site and hopfully move a tiny bit farther to nerd's aprentis.

It is true, there are ways to import a Keychain that you may have stored on another drive. But to do so will require the password for that Keychain. Without that password there is no way to open the Keychain file to import it.

Thank you, Weasleboy, While I haven't tried yet, there are only several passwords I used on that system. It's in the no news is good news till things slow down here a little.
