I just received an e-mail indicating that Truphone now no longer needs a Wi-fi connection to work on the iphone. I went to the app store to look for the update but I can't seem to find anything. Do any of you know if a) this is true and b) where you can donwload the upgrade? I'd love to hear if anybody's tested it out yet too. I see a another poster posted a similar thread on this forum which looks to have been wiped clean - something about that's a bit fishy if you ask me.

Truphone. I got one too. It says international calls at Truphone rates even out of wifi and, if in wifi you can receive calls from other truphone users as well as free call truphone users (plus those Nokia users). The presence feature let's you know when your contacts are online and able to receive your call.
I hope you know how bad the latency on 3G usually is.
Apart from the technical issues, I doubt the service providers such as AT&T will happy about this.
Of course the only way I see these apps useful is direct integration into the phone much like the VoIP client on the Nokia S60 devices.

Well I already find the app useful. I get cheap international calls. Seems pretty useful to me. However, as a direct replacement to cellular traffic, with inbound and outbound calls then yes, direct integration and background running are needed. As it stands Truphone is really only if use to initiate calls, although if enough of your friends have it then I can see a stronger argument. Which is probably why, when it was first launched for Nokias there were so many free calls given away. I had free international calls for months.
I continue to use it because call quality is good and there is no decent Skype client. (I prefer Truphone to Skype over Fring) actually, I can't think when I last used Skype.
I tested it and I think Truphone is being a bit misleading with this over 3G.
Rather than placing a call over the internet as it does thru WIFI, it appears that Truphone just makes a call thru the phone app and connects to a gateway for your destination call.
What's worse, it deducts from your credit a USA call plus the USA to International rate...........

meh, at least it's cheap to call over wifi...i wish it was free, but apple is not as cool as my old bb curve :/....they let me call via wifi for free!! TMobile of course.

I only use it in wifi and have no need to use it otherwise. Oh and because I'm lazy.
