Is there anywhere on the web to try out android before buying? Like an emulator I could play with? all the display phones in the stores near me arent turned on.

If not can anyone recommend any videos on YouTube?

I'm thinking of the s5 or m8

Emulators exist, but the experience on an emulator is very different than from holding a device in person.

If you still insist on one, though, genymotion is supposed to be pretty decent. Note that, since you'd be running it on an Intel machine (PC, etc), a lot of the apps in the play store will straight up be incompatible.

You can, alternatively, buy one of the devices and try it out in the return period. If you don't like it, pay the restocking fee and return the device.

Play with them in a store. Reality is, Android and ios are very similar now. You just have more freedom to customize the look and feel of your UI on Android. But basic functionality is nearly identical.

I was going to say that this isn't exactly accurate, but I have yet to use IOS 8

Think of it like this and you wouldn't even have to try android: Android is everything the iphone does plus widgets + multitasking + customization options...its just a matter of choosing the best android phone for your purposes. The current high end phones are the S5, m8, and LG G3. All of these will give you a smooth experience except for the LG G3. The future high end android phones are the Note 4 and the Nexus 6 and both will be the best phones for android until next spring.

There's a lot more to each OS than a list of features and functions. It's very much a "feel" thing. I encourage the OP to find a store that has working display models and play around on them.

you can install Android on a x86 VM:

http://www.android-x86.org/

Android-x86 Project - Run Android on Your PC

This is a project to port Android open source project to x86 platform, formerly known as "patch hosting for android x86 support". The original plan is to host different patches for android x86 support from open source community. A few months after we created the project, we found out that we could do much more than just hosting patches. So we decide to create our code base to provide support on different x86 platforms, and set up a git server to host it.

This is an open source project licensed under Apache Public License 2.0. If you think we did something great, consider making a donation.
