Trying to find (saved) messages on iphone 5

I have an iphone 5 that has 2.1GB of (Saved) messaged that I can't find. There are no apps on the phone anymore as I've bought an iphone 7 but just want the messages off of the 5.

When I go to manage storage it shows that I have 0 bytes available. I have 2GB in messages and 2 in photos. that's it. When I go to messages there is nothing there. I can't get the phone to backup through icloud. and when I plug it into itunes it keeps saying an error occurred.

I tried updating to ios 10 but when I do from the phone, it says I don't have enough space. Needs 1.1GB and I have 0 (supposedly). When I try to update by plugging into my pc and using Itunes, I have the newest version of itunes and when I click update it says I need to download an older version of itunes. So I tried that and it said I needed to update itunes before I could update ios.

I've tried resetting about 800 times, I've reset all settings. I downloaded iexplorer and it can't seem to find any of the saved messages either. HELP! and thanks!

Have you tried restoring your iPhone 5? Make sure you back up everything first.

i don't know about how to find the missing messages, but you can try getting back some space by doing the video rental trick:

Go to itunes store on the phone and try to rent (make sure it's RENT) something large (e.g. 'Return of the King' in HD is 6 or 7 GB). It's gonna try to get the file but since you have no room, it'll start trying to clear up some space before it'll allow the rent. You won't be charged since you don't have enough space to begin with.

after a few minutes, check your storage usage again. with any luck you will have gotten some space back.
