So, I have a 5th gen iPod video that was given to me; the screen is partially cracked and when the iPod turns on the Sad iPod icon shows. An HD failure. I've taken the iPod apart and reseated the HD, still nothing. Apple Support says that if the iPod can be put into disk mode, then it's a software issue. The iPod can be put into disk mode, and Windows detects it. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Not sure if this will work- but if you are prepared to reopen your ipod- you could tap quite firmly all over the ipod hard drive. I did this with my old ipod when it's hard drive had given up and it has been working ever since. I believe tapping the hard drive moves the "arm of the hard drive" back into place so it can read/write data again.

just tried that - didn't work. Tapped firmly all over the drive, turned it on again, same thing.

EDIT: By the way, when I turn the iPod on, the HD makes a noise like it's turning on, then stops, then tries again, constantly.
