I'm trying to help someone with his Apple ID. He typed his email address incorrectly when he set-up his iPhone and therefore can't confirm the email address. Can't change the email address/Apple ID username because he doesn't know his Apple ID password. Can't change the Apple ID password because the email address is unverified, even when using phone number verification. Is there a solution to this madness?

The easiest thing to do is create a new Apple ID. I don't know a way through that tangled mess he created.
Thank you. If I press "sign out" will he lose all his photos and contacts? Can I create a second Apple ID with the same phone number?
If you sign out, anything associated with that account is gone. You could try adding a secondary email account and or a backup number, which doesn't have to be an iPhone before signing out. If you can't do those things before signing out, it is game over on that Apple ID.
I believe when you sign out iCloud from an iPhone, iOS will give you an option to keep some data locally.
