What mode is the iphone supposed to be in when you connect it to the USB?

Pwnage 3.1.4 just sits there saying "Connect device to USB" with the little wheel going round.

Does it need to be in DFU mode?

If you already made the custom IPSW, you connect the phone to put it in DFU mode so you can use iTunes to install the IPSW

Get a tutorial from iClarified

I was following their tutorial, but it doesn't say what mode the phone should be in when Pwnage asks for it to be connected. It shows that Pwnage should display "Wait while the payload is delivered". It never says that. I tried the iPhone in DFU mode to restore the ipsw it built but it says the iphone cannot be restored. :(

Are you sure you have the correct tutorial. Pwnage Took for 3.1.2 does not install the IPSW, you do that with iTunes.

After you build the IPSW, you connect the phone to Pwnage Tool and PT helps you get the phone into DFU mode.

If Pwnage isn't detecting your iPhone plugged in via USB it sounds like you may have a bad USB cable. Does your iPhone show up in iTunes?

After you run Pwnage tool and it creates the IPSW, Pwnage tool will put the iPhone into the correct mode.

These are the instructions I am following

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5432

It says 3.1.4 at the top to they must be right.

Everything is going according to the instrctions until the "connect device t USB" bit.

What is the payload that it is supposed to be downloading to the phone?

When nothing happened, I put the iphone in DFU mode and ran iTunes. iTunes came up with the usual message about recognising an iPhone in recovery mode.

I tried to recover using the new ISPW file but it said it could not be restored. I do not remember the exact message.

I am now trying to restore the iPhone using the official 3.1.2 now. I get as far as the iPhone showing the plug and iTunes logo and I now get the message "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1611)." :(

I have tried this twice now and it's the same.

Hmm. Well I just connected the phone to my Vista machine and managed to get it back to standard 3.1.2 so it's not bricked :) I'll try updating to the new ISPW from the windows machine.

It is odd, because that machine was giving me problems last week, where as the MBP worked great.

I give up.

i got it to do the "downloading payload thing" but then itunes refused to install the new ispw. Tried a new install of iTunes, tried it on the other machine, still got the same errors.

I've read things about ECID and what it does, but there is no mention of this in the instructions on iclarify. How can any of this work without doing something with the ECID?

Why is it yo can never find all the instructions in one place. Everywhere you look, things assume you have prior knowledge.

Since you have a 3GS, apparently PT puts the phone into DFU mode automatically, I believe that is the payload they are referring to.

You should then get the blue popup and it's time for iTunes.

If you didn't get it, then something didn't go right.

Once you have the custom restore IPSW on your desktop, you can try putting the phone into recovery mode, then select the custom IPSW you built (remember to option/click or shift/click) so you can browse for IPSW.

ECID is not a factor because you are not downgrading.

I see, thank you. Well that's one less thing to worry about.

I did everything as you described. Itunes came up on its own when Pwnage put the phone into DFU mode. I selected the ISPW that was just created. I know it was the correct one because it was in a previously empty folder.

iTunes sits there for about 5 minutes with the "Preparing iPhone for restore" box up, then it shows the error saying this iphone cannot be restored. I think it was error 2001 this last time, but I had 1611 before that.

I have given up for now as I need to get the phone into a usable state for work tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

I just used Blackra1n instead and it was so simple. No restoring and no having to restore my apps.

I just have to find out what I'm able to do now :)

I tryed for ONE MONTH to restore it i got the same error 1611...tryed to restore it on diferent computer ,mac ,DFU mode ,recovery mode, hard reset, all versions of iTunes ,all usb ports ,other data cable , did someone had this error and fixed it ???? pls i`ll apreciate it so much !

Possible Mac fix

I had the same error and i found before getting to the "Connect device to usb" stage i made sure all Itunes was quit. (quit itunes and Ituneshelper) than try. worked for me. could also work for windows.

From what i've read ( please correct me if you are more informed) PwnageTool 3.1.4 cannot jailbreak 3Gs iphones using the new bootrom.

If you want a custom IPSW you must jailbreak it first with either blackra1n or Redsn0w 0.9beta, then, when creating the custom ipsw select Pwned Before. Only then can you restore with your new firmware.
**Note, even with a new ipsw you will still have a tethered JB**

And Redsn0w is now out of beta to regular release.
