So, I have this awesome little 10GB external firewire hard drive. At one point, I restored an OS X install DVD on it in order to install OS X on a computer with no DVD drive. Unfortunately, it's now indestructible and I'm begging for any ideas of how to tame this beast.

Things I've tried:
1) Using Disk Utility to erase it
Result: Volume Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk

2) Unmounting disk
Result: The disk “Untitled” could not be unmounted. Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk.
* there are certainly no applications using ANYTHING on the disk.

3) Using 'sudo rm -r /Volumes/Untitled/*'
Result: an overwhelming number of lines much like 'rm: /Volumes/Untitled/var: Invalid argument'

4) Ejecting the disk in finder
Result: The disk "Untitled" is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again.
* still no applications open

5) Booting into single-user mode and using 'diskutil verifyVolume Untitled'
Result: The Powermac's fans take off line an airplane and I quit the command I ran and restart the computer... I don't want it to die or anything.

EDIT:
6) Renaming the volume within Finder
Result: The name "blah" cannot be used. Try using another name, with fewer characters or no punctuation marks.

I hope to God that someone has a winning answer!

Thanks in advance.

Tried to format it using another operating system? Otherwise the drive table looks dead. If you can't touch the drive via OS then just destroy it and get a new one.

Thanks for the idea! I booted up from an Ubuntu live CD and used the partition program to assign it a "DiskLabel". FWIW, before I did that there was a lock icon on the main partition.

Problem solved!

Ah Live CD's are great for that. I had a dead flash that no OS could touch. Luckily I got it replaced.
