I have tried watching online tutorials on how to use a USB flashdrive to use as a backup and or storage space for my macbook pro. I am getting the following error after i have already erased and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Running operation 1 of 1: Add “Backup” by splitting “UNTITLED”…
Verifying the disk
Verifying file system.
Volume could not be unmounted.
Using live mode.
Performing fsck_hfs -fn -l -x /dev/rdisk2s2
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume header needs minor repair
The volume UNTITLED was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
File system check exit code is 8.
Restoring the original state found as mounted.
Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed. Please verify and repair each volume individually and then try again.
Operation failed…

I have tried to use first aid to repair and get this:
Repairing file system.
Volume was successfully unmounted.
Performing fsck_hfs -fy -x /dev/rdisk2s2
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume header needs minor repair
Repairing volume.
Rechecking volume.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume UNTITLED was repaired successfully.
File system check exit code is 0.
Restoring the original state found as mounted.
Operation successful.

but it has turned into a cycle of these two

Literally any tutorial online. I want to use the flash drive as both a storage and a backup disk. Besides that, the flash drive doesn’t show up when you try to use it in time machine.

Are you changing the name of the USB drive to “UNTITLED”, all upper case, when you’re creating it?

Have you thought about just getting a dedicated drive for Time Machine?

Sharing any device for Time Machine backups just sounds like asking for trouble and data loss. IMHO, backup storage need to be dedicated to that purpose, and kept in a safe storage location.

In Disc Utility, is the Show All option on in View, which is upper left corner in HS? I had a very similar issue just last week with a new USB drive. Checking View All made my 2tb disc able to be seen, formatted, and partitioned for Time Machine and general use.

I tried partitioning my time capsule hard drive. It failed, and now it doesn't show up in disk utility at all. Backups still work though?
