trying to persuade parents...

My dad wishes to buy a device that enables him to listen to his music from his computer on his hifi in the living room.

He is content on getting a squeezbox but i am trying to persuade him to get an apple tv as its alot cooler and can do video aswell...

The only problem is our JAMO DVD player packed up and the speakers on his SD Hitachi 42" plasma are pretty lousy....

Would it be possible to connect the Apple TV to a B&O hi fi around 10 metres from the tv and still have a visual from the tv and sound from the hi fi???

Also i would like to know if the apple TV would work with the equpment we have at the moment as they maybe a little outdated.

As Ive said the plasma is standard definition but it does have a componant in so I assumed I could attach it to the TV that way.

The B&O is almost 15 years old but the speakers are still of high quality...

Would it all work???

I agree that an Airport Express might be better for this, if your dad doesn't plan on watching movies or TV shows.

However, if you're set on the AppleTV, I can confirm that this will work. I have mine connected via HDMI to my television and via optical audio to my receiver.

One complaint: I have sync problems when I'm watching movies. I don't know if it's my equipment or the AppleTV itself, but video from the HDMI is just a split-second ahead of audio from the optical. (Does anybody else have this problem? Have you figured out how to fix it?)

It's an aggravation when I'm watching video and want to use surround sound-- the lips don't sync up!-- but not a problem at all for music.

I think my dad wants to be able to select what he wants to listen to whilst in the living room, not have to create a playlist to start off...

Although the airport express is a good idea i think its a little basic for what my dad wants to accomplish...

If the Mac is in a different room than the hifi, I would say that the AirExpress would not be as simple as the aTV. AirTunes is controlled from the computer, so unless it's a laptop, it's going to be cumbersome.

As for the OP's questions, I would say that aTV would be a good fit for your system.

The TV has component and aTV supports 480p over component.

I believe that aTV has optical audio output, so if your hifi can handle that, then you're set. If it doesn't, you could always run the composite audio (l/r) from the aTV to the hifi's receiver. When watching stuff on aTV, you'll get the video on the TV and the audio from the hifi.

I have a feeling this may be the quality of the cable you have bought becuase an HDMI I assume can transfer data extremely quickly where as the optical cable is not quite as quick... Atleast i had a similar problem with some sound and visula but without an HDMI cable and this was the solution to buy a higher qualty cable!

But the componant cable would have to be extra long???

Is it possible to connect the componant visula to the tv and the audio to the hifi?

EDIT: Ah slight problem the B&O is as i said 15 years old and I have just checked and the AUX needs to be a midi cable??!!

Would it be possible to find a aTV --> Midi solution? with the visual still working via componant on the tv??

This is a somewhat common issue. The newer AV Receivers have circuitry in them to fix the lip synch problem.

I thought it might be. Too bad.

I know some receivers have a "delay" option, but my problem is that the receiver is already delayed. I need it to go "faster." Or I need the TV to delay for half a second, or the AppleTV to allow me to change its outputs this way, but neither seems to have that option.
