Trying to remember the name of a thriller I read

I got the book I'm looking for from the library a few years ago and I'd like to read it again but can't remember the title or the author. I'd like to buy it to read it on holiday in a few days.

Set in the USA I believe. A young woman reporter(?) walks round a corner to find there's been an explosion in a hotel and some of the people have been brought outside. She's the first reporter on the scene and begins to photograph, then later to investigate. It's quite a photography based novel and she has a Leica. At one point she has to go into a camera shop to buy a new lens to replace a broken one. There's a twist in the story which I won't divulge

Not much to go on I'm afraid, but can anyone help please?

That looks worth reading! It's not the one I'm looking for though, I'm afraid. The story is about the investigation.

Sorry, I can't remember any more details, just that I enjoyed it! Not very helpful is it? I think it's a one off, rather than part of a series. I was just hoping maybe someone had read it as well and could say what it is.

Thanks for the recommendation Ken! I've just reserved it at the library—there's only one copy and it's in a far flung part of the county. If nothing else, at least I'll get a good read out of the search.

Okay, I'll bite and add a recommendation: Personally, I love the book "The Glass Palace" by the Indian writer Amitav Ghosh. The book covers the lives and times of a series of interlocking characters across a few generations in Burma, India, and Malaysia from the 1880s until the 1990s.

And - in the second half of the book - there is a wonderful character who is a photographer - it is his profession, - one that starts as a hobby - but becomes his profession, his life's philosophy, and what he uses to shape and define his life and his world view.

There are nice vignettes on photography - nuggets threaded through the narrative about the history of photography in India, and photographs of the characters play a role in the narrative, both as they are taken and as they reappear to be discussed, pored over, and examined and remembered decades later.

Well, "The Glass Palace" was where I first came across a discussion about Edward Weston's photograph "The Nautilus", for example.

In fact, my youngest Amelia was named Amelia after Amelia Sachs the main female character in the Lincoln Rhyme series from Jeffrey Deaver. Amelia Sachs being a strong red head and our Amelia, well yes, looking to be following in those lines!

Well, one of the reasons I loved The Glass Palace is that it is a good old fashioned story with terrific characters, and a lovely linear narrative structure; I also liked the vignettes of - and disquisitions on - history, social, cultural, and political - tucked into the story, on stuff such as rubber plantations, Burma's royal family, fashion and photography, - it is the kind of book I like, a great story, but I learned a lot while reading it.

Suffice to say, my mother also loved it, as did some of my friends to whom I recommended it; when I was away for months at a time in Georgia a few years ago, she had asked me for lists of (good) books to read, and I recommended The Glass Palace to her; she adored it, and was completely gripped by it.
