I'm looking to buy an iPhone relatively soon. I've heard about jailbreaking but I have no idea what it really means.
If I have an AT&T phone currently (Blackjack II), does it mean that I can place the SIM card from that into a new iPhone w//o a contract, and only pay for what my old phone (the Blackjack) would cost per month? Can you even call people with a jailbroken iPhone? I'm a no0b I know. But any help would be nice.

I'm no expert but, since you have an AT&T activated sim card, you should be able to buy any iPhone out. As the previous poster said, it will cost a lot more money.

From my knowledge, jailbreaking is specifically for the use of download apps not approved by the app store and a few other things. All other phone functions would work.

As for your Blackjack II data plan, I'm not sure. Your phone/talk plan should work fine.

I'm with T-Mobile but I'm sure what I've said makes sense with AT&T also. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey Jaredwaynef...Please don't take this as me being negative but you need to search both google and this website. When I decided to Jailbreak I too had no idea what was involved or what it meant. I educated myself. There's nothing wrong with asking questions but your question is extremely broad. Learn WHAT Jailbreaking is first THEN ask your questions.

I'll give you a little head start: Jailbreaking allows your to (among many other things) install applications that are not availble from the appstore, change the theme (look) of your iPhone, change sounds and alerts and more.

And yes, a Jailbroken phone works just like a non-jailbroken phone.

Oh wow, I've never seen this before! Google you say? What a bizarre search?! (/sarcasm) But really, thanks for showing me that rude people are on EVERY forum, even this one...

I don't think the question is all that broad... Considering the question was essentially (without as much words), Will my AT&T non-iPhone(SPECIFICALLY my Blackjack 2) SIM card work on a jailbroken iPhone?
Personally, I thought this would be a yes or no kind of question. I know what it means to jailbreak, and I knew it was used to download 3rd party apps and other things not necessarily given by Apple(or service provider). I knew (what I thought to be the basics) of Jailbreaking. I searched both this forum and Google for this question and was given several answers that changed from age of phone, contract, and type of phone. So I figured asking this forum would help siphon the right answer from the multiple answers.
These forums (at least in the MBP section) have helped me greatly for a long time. Thanks for the last line of your response though. That was basically what I was hoping to hear.
Sorry for being a waste of time. I'll make sure to take it up with the reason forums were created...
