Now that the :apple:TV3 will output 1080p. I'm trying to understand my options.

Must 1080p rips come from Bluray, or can they come from DVD?

Since the :apple:TV3 will play 1080p, I'm interested in ripping my Bluray discs, whereas before I was only interested in ripping my DVDs b/c I didn't think the rip would be anywhere close to the Bluray quality.

From what I understand regarding the Bluray rips, my options for getting 1080P are: (1) makemkv > handbrake > subler, or (2) makemkv > hope handbrake releases a 1080p update soon?

If Handbrake does release an update to convert movies to 1080p, will I be able to reconvert the handbrake converts I already have without reripping all of my DVDs?

Forget DVD's. There is no point in ripping at a higher rate than the original.

The same applies for your old rips. Upgrading will not add content.

Your options for getting 1080p will be to rip BluRays (I don't know the technicalities of doing this as I've only ever done to 720p), or buying from iTunes (or maybe another compatible online store).

You can do 1080P encodes for ATV right now. Just use the ATV2 preset and manually set the encode size to 1920 x 1080. You will of course not be getting the very best encode that ATV3 will be capable of playing back. If you want that, I would hold off a few weeks and see what the Handbrake folks come up with for an ATV3-specific preset.

Personally I don't plan on making any changes to my encoding, will still be doing my HD rips @ 720 as I will have several ATV2 still and don't want to make files which only ATV3 can properly/reliably play. Then again a lot of folks say ATV2 can play L4.1 at pretty high bitrates reliably now after the latest software update. I guess we'll see. I wouldn't make any hasty decisions just yet. :D
