Trying to unlock iPhone and REMAIN in Notification Center, not go to home screen

I have the “no previews of messages” option turned on for Notification Center/lock screen notifications when my phone is locked. I prefer unlocking before me or anyone can read the messages. But I believe I used to be able to unlock my phone (using Touch ID) while looking at the Notification Center (NC) and remain in NC and see the previews appear right there, but now when I unlock it takes me to my home screen and I have to pull down the notification center again. I do these quick checks often throughout the day and it gets annoying having that extra step every time. Anyone know if I’m doing something wrong or if this is just the way it is in iOS 11? The thing is SOMETIMES it unlocks and stays in NC just as I want, but very rarely and I don’t know how to replicate it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know what you are tying to do.

First off, you need to make sure that you have the Rest Finger to Open setting turned off. This will tell the system not to go to the home screen when you rest your finger on Touch ID and instead stay on the Lock/Notification screen until you actually click your home button.

However, if you don’t have the Raise To Wake setting turned on, then you’ll need to use the power/side button to wake your phone in order to stay on the Notification screen as pressing the home button to wake the screen will unlock the device.

However, if you don’t have the Raise To Wake setting turned on, then you’ll need to use the power/side button to wake your phone in order to stay on the Notification screen as pressing the home button to wake the screen will unlock the device.

PERFECT! Thank you! I didn't know about that setting.

Side note- it took me a little bit of testing but I figured out that after turning off the setting, touch ID will still take me to my home screen if I press the home button to wake the screen then keep my finger resting on the home button too long. I have to keep my finger on it just long enough for it to register but not long enough for it to go to home screen, which I think will take some practice; or my other option is to use the power button to wake the screen, then use touch ID to unlock, which won't take me to home screen no matter how long I rest my finger on the button, but that's a bit more uncomfortable and takes more time. I think I'll go with the first option. I should be able to get the timing down with a little practice.

I should note that I'm using an SE which has first generation Touch ID. Not sure if there's a difference with second generation Touch ID.
