I'm trying to upgrade to 11 through iTunes, but iTunes wants to restore phone when connected. It only gives me 2 options... set up as a new phone or restore from a 2-year-old backup. I don't want to do either. I want to upgrade from Itunes since the storage is low on the iphone 6 plus. How can I upgrade without having to wipe the phone or convert it back to an old backup.

Not sure why it's not letting just do an update to the software (should just be able to click on "Check for Updates" and be done with it; new/different computer and first time connecting to it? Already did a reset to the phone before update?).

Downlevel iTunes? 12.7 is the official supported version for iOS 11.

Since connecting to iTunes, you can do a backup (matter of fact, iTunes does that automatically when doing an update) and can restore from that.

Because iTunes doesn't recognise the telephone.
