Hello everyone,

i have been working around on our old neglected family iMac and went with some upgrades. I bought an i7 860, new AMD M6100 and a new 1 TB SSD from Crucial.

After taking everything apart, cleaning the device and put most of the parts together, i noticed that the temp cable has no connector on the SSD.

So i have looked around and stumbled upon this cable from an 20“ iMac that came out in the same time

Would it be possible to install this cable instead of the old one?

Would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks in advance!

The cable you posted is not the original one. It's a remade. The original transistor has SMD form factor. This one is a through-hole form factor.
I know because I bought 20 transistors like that trying to remake the sensor myself.
It worked just like when you twisted the wires together, very inaccurate, but it indeed did the job of lowering the HDD fan rotating speed.
If you still insisted in buying a sensor, I would suggest buying the original ODD sensor. It's more accurate and work natively with the iMac EFI.

But since twisting the wire and use Mac Fan Control cost zero, this sensor is much less attractive to many people.
For some of my iMac 2009 and 2010, I just leave the sensor open. The fan will rotate wildly at boot, but it will settle down as soon as Mac Fan Control kicks in.

I just made a fine wire bridge of the two connectors, insulated all with tape and shoved it out of the way.
I did not feel the need to have a temp sensor on a SSD.
