I just saw something released today in Cydia called xGPS. I put it on my iPhone but really couldn't use it... Also, the map that it showed was not in the U.S.A.

Anyone know anything about this? The dev says voice guidance and turn-by-turn coming by end of the month...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Wonder how effective it is with a first gen iphone. So far so good...

Just tried to install and got the size mismatch error from cydia. Anyone else experiencing this?

You have to go in to the settings and change over from the xGPS GPS to the iPhone3G GPS- then it'll pick up your location (or at least it did on mine).

It operates in Landscape mode which is very nice... but nothing I put in could get it to give me directions, it just kept coming back with an error that it couldn't calculate them or something.

It looks like it has a good bit of potential but still has a ways to go...

what repository did you find this in.

I have 1.1 installed from the official xgps repository from a couple of months ago, and I don't see an update in cydia

Official Repository: cydia.xwaves.net

Just the standard ones that come with Cydia. It popped up today or yesterday (I forgot).

Is it me? I find most of these apps like pulling teeth to get basic instructions.
Mine doesn't accept any "To" locations. Zip.

I have 1.1.01. 1.2 isn't available yet? I don't get it.

Yea... Hopefully the app evolves into a little easier to use. Too bad Telenav isn't out for the iPhone :(

ok. 1.2 (voice) not available till 2/20. I'm not fully understanding the concept of loading maps. If it uses Google, I'd think it would just generically tap off of that.

:) Yea. I'm gleaning that. Well darn. I saw the Giz RSS on this in my mailbox and got all excited.

But this is great. But very disturbing we don't have an official one from TomTom et al yet.

I'm getting the size mismatch error in Cydia when i try to install xGPS as well.

I've searched high and low as to what the problem is and how to remedy it and haven't found anything helpful. I've read a lot of just wait and it will work eventually tips.

Does anyone know what the deal is??

Thanks in advance!

Ive been using this app for the past 2 month because I cancelled my data plan and need offline map ability. To search for directions you have to type in (or select from contacts) the "from and to" address.

so this works with no data plan?

i also have no data plan and want an offline maps tool. can it still find you on the map with cell towers (i'm using the 2g)

another question i have is can the iphone find you with no data plan? whenever i turn location services on, it uses data even if i'm on wifi

I don't think the 2G cell towers are accurate enough for this. However, I have seen a video on YouTube of someone using xGPS with an iPhone GPS Receiver addon with the 2G iPhone.

You can use iGPS360 from http://www.orangegadgets.com/ for the 2G. It works just as good, if not better than the built in 3G's GPS for xGPS. It is $75 though...

i have a couple of questions
i have a fairly new iphone bought in like september of 2008. i think it is a 3g
does 3g have anything to do with generation, like first generation second generation? or is it referring to my internet connection?
would this app from cydia work for my iphone? i watched a video on youtube where the guy was getting turn-by-turn directions which is what i would want.
he was in his car and he had something plugged into his iphone, i didn't know if what he had plugged in was some kind of gps device, or a power supply. i saw another video where a guy was using gps, he had something plugged in as well and was using the maps program and his iphone would update like every 5seconds when he had the gps app running. i guess my main question is in order to use turn-by-turn on my iphone can i download xgps or xGPS from cydia and have my iphone spead the directions to me?

You can download a map area, so if you do not have service somewhere you can still use the software, unlike the stock maps app

Im using it and I find it awesome so far, cant wait until voice gets included and minor bugs fixed..aka not being able to use your current position as the start location, as well as not being able to access map bookmarks.

How are you using it? Each dest I enter says it can't find. Current loc to my home address....nothing.

"No driving directions can be computed"

Ok I finally found the answer...the size mismatch error comes from having two repos with the xGPS app in it. So delete the xwaves repo in Cydia. Then go and try and install it, xGPS should still be under the navigation section since it is hosted by the modmyi repo. Now it should install with no size mismatch error.

That's what I did, and now i have it installed on my phone.

When you enter an address you have to put the full address in, street, town, the lot (country may also be needed)! eg. "Windmill street, Macclesfield, UK" works fine.

Perhaps external GPS works better than iPhone's GPS chip, but after running this app on few trips, I begin to understand why experts were saying Turn-by-Turn on iPhone is not exactly applicable. I simply cannot get accurate GPS position well enough to use turn advisory. The app did not detect my changing position until I have already pass the street I suppose to turn.

I hate to say it, but this app won't really work. It will cause more pain than benefit.

That's about 1 min from my house. Small world.

i have watched a couple of videos on xgps. i see two different versions of xgps one uses googlemaps i think, and the other has it's own icon. i am thinking of buying a external gps but would like to find out a couple of things first. can someone please clarify this for me?
