Turn off Auto correct but keep spell checker?

Just wonder why Apple does not allow this option.

Auto correct annoys me. But I still want to keep the spell checker.

So why does Apple disable spell checker if you disable auto correct. You can't keep the spell checker option if you turn off the auto correct.

Seems to me like Apple should let you have this option.

Auto-correct annoys me so damn much that I've just shut spell checker off as well. It's NEVER helped and always filled in the wrong word.
 
I like the autocorrect but not in all apps, for example for those Instant messaging apps.
 
Not sure why some people hate auto correct so much. I've read on numerous instances that it is a pain in the ass with certain foreign languages, but when it comes to English it works marvelously well. It lets me type like a wreck and somehow comes out with the right words in most cases (with the errors being small enough a concern that they do not outweigh the time saved). So are people swearing like sailors or wanting to type AOL speak nonsense?

Honestly curious about this one.

P.S. Agree. It would make sense for Apple to offer that choice.
 
I hate that it changes "wtf" to "WTF", making you look like an idiot. I think that was their original plan. So we'd be clean and stop using wtf

I don't think it's that reliable, even for English. And I hate the way when I miss the correction, delete the word and retype it it will still auto"correct" it - several times.

It can't even spell things like organize properly (sic)

Are you referring to the difference between American and International English? I thought you could configure that in preferences. And auto-correct does learn. I've found that with some teaching it'll learn to work around most any repeated annoyance.

Can you? OMG, keyboard and spell check my major gripe with the iOS devices
 
I had to turn off autocorrect because I use my iPhone for calendar for work. We have frequent meetings with gobbledegook acronyms and it kept changing meeting acronyms to nonsense words. I got tired of typing everything twice and shut it off. Back when I was using it mainly for home use, it bothered me but not as much as it bothers me for munging all my work related acronyms.

Have you tried Settings ->General -> International -> Language -> British English?

Now that would suck. It doesn't like strange acronyms/abbreviations. It can learn, though, so if those oddities are consistent it is worth teaching it. If there are too many I'd disable it too.

Googling for "teach iPhone autocorrect" I found an instructions over at ars technica that involve typing the text over and over again in the google search box.

Perhaps I'll give this a try and see if it makes my life easier. For now, I'll leave autocorrect switched off as there are dozens of acronyms I would need to "teach" my iThings not to mess with. Thanks for mentioning a way to teach autocorrect as it is a good thing to know about.

No problem. I hope it works out for you. My iPhone doesn't fuss about all the web design/development acronyms and terms I throw at it as it has learned better—but it is hard to compare to a business which has gone over the top with their abbreviations and acronyms.

This. Everytime i text wtf to somebody and it shows up as WTF, the person i send it to usually thinks i am really pissed.
 
Is there any way (via Cydia is fine) that I can just disable the iPhone's inane tendency to autocorrect numbers? If I write 02, for instance, it might change it to WE, and if I'm typing fast enough it gets annoying. I like it while writing out words, but I use numbers a lot to record time of day and other things, and it's not fun to have to keep rewriting the numbers.

I can't possibly keep hitting the X button three times on every number combination. I don't even know WHY the iPhone does it, since it doesn't even have a T9 keyboard that I assume is the reason why it even tries to do the number-to-letters autocorrect.
 
I use ManualCorrect in cydia. Theres a free one that just turns off auto correct but still spell checks and lets you click the word to change it. The pay one lets you set what words auto correct and set custom corrections (I think, I only have the free one)

Inspell in cydia, lets you create a user dictionary
 
Yeah i'd like to be able to enable or disable auto correct, and change the words in the dictionary.

I typed in "i'll see you sooon" once, and it came out as "i'll see you zooplankton".
