Turn off incoming Contact Posters

I'm not yet installing the iOS 17 beta, but I haven't seen this question. Satisfactorily answered for me anyway. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is possible for a grumpy old git like me to disable incoming contact posters and just have the default incoming call screen for all incoming calls, regardless of what the caller has said for their contact poster.

Contact Posters work the same way as the “Share Name and Photo” feature within Messages.

By default, if a user as selected to share their contact poster automatically with contacts and you’re mutual contacts, it will show up. You can choose to override an individual’s contact poster within contact settings, but there’s no option to just straight up disable contact posters. They’re effectively just contact photos to the system.

Once you choose a custom contact poster for an individual, it will not update it to something else unless you choose to update it.

So you can’t fully disable them from showing up, but you can change a contact’s back to the default screen and it will stay that way permanently.

Ahh that’s great thanks. So I’ll have go to through each contact and turn it off manually for each one?

It does seem like the sort of thing that should have an option. I'm not too familiar with the feature, but I can imagine that some people could use objectionable images as a way of sending unsocilited "pics".

I worried about that as well but very very few people are going to make their contact pic and x rated pic that can be possibly seen by everyone they contact.

You should write a suggestion to Apple about some kind of override switch.

That’s how Apple works now. If they say you’re getting a “feature,” you’re getting it and you can’t change it because they decided you like it.

I actually thought the other day that this would be great way for people doing impersonation scams to add credibility to their grift... So these only work if I already have the caller in my contacts?

The current behaviour is to prompt the user to update the avatar if their contact has changed and has automatic sharing set. I don’t believe this has changed in iOS 17.

Sadly that’s only valid if you’re using your phone at the time of the incoming call. If your phone is not in use and locked you’ll get the full Monty in all its glory. I feel like iOS 17 is geared towards kids and it’s very off-putting to me as an adult.

I was curious about this since I don’t get many calls; the ones I do get are often contacts without photos. So I just had my wife call me, phone was locked and her name and photo appeared in a small banner with a a small circular photo at the top of my phone. In fact I can’t remember ever getting a full screen image with any call. If I have it was years ago. I don’t know what setting controls that but I have the banner option checked and that’s pretty much what I get.

I mean you have to remember iOS is not just used by adults. They are catering to all demographics.

Personally I don’t think it would be a widespread issue. It’s been a month and no scandal has happened yet.

True enough. But sometimes people think their profile picture is “cute”. They might dress problematically. The duck face, beaked lip picture, is also not appropriate.

At work my phone sits out on my desk, screen up. While there is a privacy shield on the glass, if someone walks over and they look straight down- any contact poster that’s inappropriate, is up for display.

And frankly I don’t want your whole face, text, colors, and a whole production to take over my phones UI to feed the creative or narcissistic tendencies of any individual in my contact card. Their ID needs to be relegated to a small, tasteful, photo that doesn’t just change without permission. And the phone’s caller ID UI should really be dedicated to name, number, and interactive phone functions.

Additionally I don’t know why contacts has been updated so that a contact’s photo, massively takes up the screen and forces so much vital data down and out of immediate view.

I’m a huge Apple fan, but what’s the move toward giving your contacts, outsized influence over the system and prioritizing photos and style over vital data and function. It’s still a phone and communication device at the end of the day.
