Turn off the iMac display?

When I buy the new iMac I'll have it in my bedroom, but I'll also connect it to a second monitor placed in my living room.

My question is; is it possible to turn off the iMac display, and still use the computer with a second monitor?

The reason I ask is because occasionally I need to use the computer late at night when the wife is sleeping, and I don't want to bother her with the display on in the bedroom…
