Not sure why they changed this... I like to leave my ringer and SMS alerts on at night, but do not want an email notification sound. I used to go into settings/sounds and just slide the new mail sound off at night and turn it back on in the morning. Now the slider switch is gone. I have to go into the available sounds and actually select none. Not impossible but definitely an extra step. Am I missing something?

I still miss my blackberry sound profiles - not sure why they don't build this in it seems like it would not be that complicated. As far as I know they only way to use sound profiles is to jailbreak.

Yes, your criticism is certainly valid. Apple supposes that normal and silent modes should be enough for you.

I remember back in the day (like pre-tiger) that OS X used to have energy settings profiles accessible from the battery icon on laptops. I thought this was great but they're now gone in favor of plugged in/not plugged in settings.

I suggest getting the app named boxcar.

Set up your e-mail to forward a copy to boxcar and then it sends a push notice telling you there is new mail.

The advantage here is that you can have boxcar play a sound and it has 'quiet hours' you can set in the app. That way it will shut itself up every night without you having to do anything.

When i go to Settings -> Sounds -> New Mail , there is a button at the top that says "None". Is that not working for you?

Yes that works fine, but in iOS4 there was a on/off slider on the Settings->sounds screen for new mail. Tapping new mail, then going to the top and tapping none is an extra step. Not undoable, just annoying. The on/off slider worked fine. I guess adding the ability to select the particular sound is the reason this changed.

Oh, i gotcha... Yea, that kinda sucks. I never had a use for it, so never even thought about that being an issue. Submit a request to Apple, I'm sure they'll bring it back.

I wouldn't mind having some kind of "night mode" with a few settings and a simple switch in the top hierarchy layer in settings (or automatic if one so wishes); e.g. phone ringer on, message sounds (mail/sms etc) off during a time interval.

A mail list I'm on bleeps in 06.00 every other morning for example, and a few other night owl friends check in at 02.00 every now and then via text. Night time text messages are rarely important, whereas a phone call usually is in my experience (apart from drunk calls, that is).
