I had to go out of the country for three weeks, and, for security reasons, decided to leave my iPad at home. I was concerned about the battery draining while I was gone. Well, surprise, surprise! I turned the iPad off completely when I left, and came home yesterday to find the Battery still at 100%, after three weeks.
It hadn't drained a bit. Just a note for those of you who may someday have to do the same thing I did, without worrying about battery longevity.

Concerns about devices running out of battery when left unused reminds me of the "bad old days" when everything was in RAM and the only way to keep your data safe was to keep a battery charge. Back when I had "real" PalmOS devices, that is to say before the days of the dreaded NVFS devices which were notoriously unstable, I used to have to worry that not charging meant losing everything. Basically the best thing Palm ever did for its customers, giving them non volatile memory, turned into their worst nightmare.

iPod Touch and iPad came along more recently and losing data after running out of battery is a non-issue. Even if you left your iPad sitting on the coffee table turned on and had it set to never turn itself off, you would return from vacation to find it dead but easily chargeable and usable. It's not a good thing to let Li-Ion batteries drain completely. It takes away from battery life. When I say battery life, I don't mean the number of hours you will get before your next charge so much as I mean the number of charge cycles remaining before your batteries won't hold a charge at all. So of course it's a good idea to press and hold power to put your iPad completely to sleep if it's going to be left unused for an extended number of days. But even if you did let it run down all the way, your data should still be there after you charge it up when you return.
