How do you turn off the MBP in sleep mode? Do I just hold the power button until it shuts off? I'm doing the battery calibration thing from apple's website...

4. Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.
5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

So step 4 says let the computer go to sleep. Step 5 says turn off the computer, which is where I'm not sure how to do. And if I do turn it off, can i go straight to 6 or is it turn off the computer for five hours or more as well?

Seems like an awful long process to do this entire thing.

I just did it, it seems to be worth it. I just held down the power button. However, when I started it back up, it wasn't shut down, just in a "deep sleep"

When I calibrate my battery, I leave it to go into deep sleep mode. Then that's it.

I read on the Apple website you can let it drain every ounce out of the battery (hence in your post where you have to leave it sleeping for 5 hours or so) - but I don't think it is necessary to do that? Either or I've been calibrating my battery wrongly all this time!

Thanks everyone. I think I will just let it automatically go to sleep and then hold down the power button to let it go into a deep sleep.

Re: joining fantasy league; that's great techlover...i'm hoping the league gets filled up some more...you are number 7, so we'll need at least one more to make 8, which isn't bad, but i'm hoping to get 10...welcome...i can' wait for the regular season to start.

Calibrating my battery lowered my idle temperature by 1-3 degrees.

Now it hovers at the low 50s instead of the mid-50s.

It is necessary. Very necessary. The reason you must do that is to ensure that the battery has indeed lost all of its potential charge. If you don't do that, then you're not allowing the battery to be correctly calibrated.

I simply use my computer until I see the "5 Minutes Left" message, and then shut down most programs. Within a few minutes the computer will go to sleep. I then allow it to stay this way for 5+ hours (usually 8, I do this right before bed so I don't miss my notebook). Then, in the morning, I simply plug it right back in and let it charge.

Well, the amount of battery charge still left once it goes into deep sleep mode must be very tiny - I don't think it is "very necessary" but maybe someone else could comment.

The small charge is what throws the estimator off. That's why sometimes you'll see a 96% when the real charge is 92% or something. Battery calibration doesn't improve system performance or anything; it's sole purpose is to show you the correct battery life left. If you don't correctly calibrate, then you won't see what you want to see.

Step five says turn it off OR let it sleep, so it's not contradicting, it's just giving options. Last time I calibrated it went to sleep on its own, with the light on the front pulsing, but in the morning the light was off. I don't know if this is deep sleep or off, but it turned on as if it were off, so it seems that leaving it like that after it sleeping really does drain every ounce of power, which I think is the point. I'd say let it fall asleep and then leave it, but since they put in the "or" both options are probably perfectly fine.
