Try quitting all widgets.
Any speedup? If not then you could be barking up the wrong tree.
There are a lot worse things in OS X than dashboard if you only have a few open. I am running on a G3 500 384GB RAM, and don't notice the slowdown until I evoke the DB and have lots of widgets open, all vying for that bandwidth at once!
