1. How do I make sure my Mac NEVER begins shutting down while I am using it to install updates?

2. How do I make sure my Mac NEVER closes all my programs when I am not using it to install updates?

I went through settings and did not see the option.

Thanks

Updates requires a reboot, so the only way to install them is to let it reboot.

You can disable the automatic install of updates in System Preferences -> Software Update -> Advanced. Uncheck "Install macOS updates" and "Install app updates" from the "Automatically" section.

Yeah, I understand the need to reboot, though it is the most annoying thing to wake up to find everything I had open gone. OR to be working on something in the middle of the day and have programs start closing on me in real-time....

Thanks, I must have missed this setting

You can go into settings>energy saver and put the slider for turn off display to never.
Uncheck put disks to sleep when possible and uncheck power nap

That’s nothing to do with his issue. He’s referring to auto-restarting after installing updates.

Why would you be doing things when updates are being installed? If you don't have auto updates turned on then you would have to tell it to update - when you do that stop using for something else.

Do you have this box checked when you shut down/reboot?

Several years ago Apple seemed to initiate this new thinking - you WANT these updates, that's why your system is rebooting so often.(2016 MBP, faulty logic board and crushed connector duding manufacture). As noted above, change the defaults on installing apps. Not all updates require restart, but who needs it? I have changed the settings such that the apps that were open on shutdown come back. Same with Safari and tabs.

I experienced the apps relaunch after restart. The thing that helped was manually recreating my user account. Not sure what got corrupted in my user account but something was corrupted. I also found that pressing the volume buttons did not work correctly and that was also resolved when I manually recreated my user account.
