Turning off the iMac display

Is there any way to either shut off the screen altogether (a la Apple portables) or turn the light off 100% (also, a la Apple portables). You can do this in XP, which is nice as I prefer to use my 20" external display with my 17" C2D iMac.

Any hacks or jazz to fix this?

There is no way to do that other then letting the display sleep, sleeping the computer or physically putting something over the screen.

That's what I've been doing too just putting a dark shirt over the screen. ah well, would be a nice feature to absolutely turn it off but nevermind. Thanks

If you have an external monitor plugged in, you can press F7 to switch between mirroring, dual and lid-closed mode. I dunno if Apple directly prevented lid-closed mode on the iMacs, but give it a try.
