It should take anywhere from 20-40 seconds from a cold boot. If you've turned automatic login off you will have a login window.

And, is there a sleep mode with the screen closed?

I want to run Adium, but I don't want to exit out. (Don't you exit out when you close the screen?)

The system goes to sleep when the lid's closed (except I think it has a mode where you can operate it with the lid closed and an external monitor).

And nothing can run on a computer that's asleep, so Adium will appear by default be logged out of any IM networks.

Well, I'm basing that off of my experience with AIM on a desktop. If you leave my computer alone for 15 minutes, it does to sleep and AIM is idle with "ZZZ" next to my name. I want that, those little "zzz" next to my name.

Could I go into settings and have it sleep at 15 minutes, then turn the screen off (turn brightness down)?

So, then enable after 15 minutes, sleep mode?

I'll just keep the screen open. Better yet, when I get my MacBook, I'll be able to understand everything.

Are you sure this desktop you're talking about is entering sleep mode? Not just turning off the display or something? If it's truly in a sleep mode, AIM will be disconnected from the network. Programs don't run in sleep mode. It's basically one step away from being off.

Well, the screen turns off and when I move the mouse, I can hear the hard drive starting back up.

I think it's sleep mode.

You can make the hard drive spin down and turn the screen off without putting the computer to sleep in the energy settings on both Windows and OS X. So you should be able to configure it to do the same thing. You don't need any special software to do that. The computer is not asleep when you're doing this -- AIM on Mac and Windows are the same for this, as far as I have ever seen -- they log you out if you put it to sleep. So your PC isn't asleep either. Just screen and HD powered down.

The thing you can't / shouldn't do is to use a program like InsomniaX to disable sleep and then close your awake notebook and move it around while it's still awake. That's bad for the computer.

Ah, alright. So, just enable lower spinning HDD and shut off the screen, but keep the notebook open? Is there an option to have the screen closed, but have it not go to sleep?

I probably won't use the InsomniaX program. Doesn't look safe in my opinion.

You can have the computer awake with the screen closed if there's an external keyboard and mouse and display plugged in, without any special software. If you want it closed but not connected to anything, you have to use something like InsomniaX....

So, my best bet is just to have the hard drive spin less and have the screen turn off?

I'll just do that. Oh, and I'll check out that InsomniaX program.

I wouldn't use that, and I'm sure it voids your warranty.

And yeah-if a computer is still connected to an IM network, it is *NOT* asleep. That's impossible.
