I figured out how to modify the .ovpn files that my VPN service provides to make them work on Windows XP with the newest version of OpenVPN for XP work. Turns out, you can use Tunnelblick v3.5.25 (https://tunnelblick.net/downloadsDeprecated.html) on Mac OS X 10.4+ and if you modify the .ovpn files in the same way it works as well.

I have not gotten Tunnelblick 3.5.25 to work on PowerPC or Intel Tiger (crashes immediately), but it is successfully working on Snow Leopard. I can't find any older versions to try on Tiger.

How to modify the .ovpn files:
1) Open a .ovpn file in textedit.
2) Delete the line 'compress' and replace it with 'comp-lzo'.
3)Delete the entire section of '<crl-verify>...</crl-verify>'

its recommended not to use compression/comp-lzo due to a security vulnerability that seems to be pretty severe, not sure if thats been patched yet
