I'm looking to buy a new TV and I basically only have one requirement: being able to turn it on and off from my mac (maybe adjust the volume too).

There are several TVs with a RS-232 serial port that you can send commands like this to, but I don't doubt it's not as simple as just getting a USB-serial cable and whipping up some applescripts.

Is anyone controlling their TV from their mac HTPC in this way? Sound off and let me know what you're using.

Youll need a remote.

With an iphone/ipod touch/ipad plus the L5 IR adaptor, it'll control your mac/atv/tv combo happily. (The L5 is just for the IR for the TV)

No I won't - there's linux nerds all over the internet using their TV's RS-232 port to send control signals to it. It MUST be possible on the Mac.
