Hi,
I have found myself in an unfortunate situation, My Laptop was stolen, and it contained all my music downloads and more impotantly about four years worth of photos (no backups made). However last month I did purchase Apple TV, and synchronize it with the now stolen laptop, This means I have a copy of all the photos and the music on the tv, however I have no idea of how I can either make a copy of this imformation from the Apple TV unit, or maybe synchronize it in a bi-directional format to a new laptop, so as to backload the files from the tv to the new laptop (not an apple just a normal pc). Has anyone else had this problem or know of any known solutions

You could try a professional data recovery service, it won't be cheap.

Then spend the $5 on a 25 DVD-R spindle so you can then have backups of all your stuff every 2 weeks for the next year. Basically you didn't bother with backups, which would have cost you pennies, and have been caught out. Happens to all of us, but if we're clever it only ever happens once.

You might be able to pull the hard drive out of it and connect it to your computer with one of those ide/sata to usb adapters and just copy them over. I don't know off the top of my head if the ATV stores them in a weird format or not. I do happen to have one of those cables and the old drive I just took out of my ATV when I put a bigger one in sitting at home. Maybe I'll try it out if I get a chance tonight.

Something tells me this wouldn't work the same way you wouldn't be able to copy music right from an iPod's HD. I hope I'm wrong.

I really feel your pain with the PICS, I just had my first kid in Feb and both of us would DIE if anything happened to our videos/pics of him.

Did you have the pics on mobile me/flickr or anything?

This is one story I hope has a good ending. If you are able to recover look into a Drobo or at least enable Time Machine via external hard drive.
