I was thinking of an idea which may apply to gridlock as an additional feature.

The springboard should act just as the dock does and space the icons accordingly.

It could detect which row you are placing the icon and then adjust. If you don't understand my concept then just remove 1 icon from 4 which are in your dock and you'll see that it spaces different than how the springboard would.
