We saw this hit the fan early today, hot on the tail of the AMBER Alert post. Apparently the 1.3 update to Tweetie, a popular Twitter client for iPhone we've covered before, has been denied release in the App Store because the app could potentially show "offensive language."

As you may know, blatantly offensive apps (like really "adult" content) are verboten on Apple's store. Unfortunately, that rule was probably intended to keep X-rated content (maybe hard R as well) off the store, not inadvertently prevent an update to a popular Twitter client. In this case, the offensive material could pop up in Twitter trend searches -- never mind that you can find much worse using Google's search app or mobile Safari itself.



wtf is going on at apple? this is really getting to be disgusting. are they trying to make me buy the pre when my contract ends in july? i'm getting really tired of this nonsense from apple and this is a mac fan speaking. no flash, stupid app rejection process and no background processes. i'm a half step away from getting the pre. developers have not even got their renewal applications for the app store. apple had better get their act together because i'm a half step away from switching to palm.

btw the reason it was rejected was in the twitter trend #****ItList was one of the top trends.

Completely agree, it's totally ridiculous - it's not up to apple to tell us whether we are offended by swearing or not. I couldn't care less providing it's not racist or discriminative.

I don't use emoji but it's a perfect example: Why should apple decide what we can and can't have on our devices? I can understand if they had said "we don't want to focus on developing pictures of poos and umrellas" but as other developers have given the option through apps and apple is dictating and saying "your not allowed smiley faces on your £350 iPhone because we say so..."

Stop treating us like babies Apple - it's not up to you to make our decisions for us!

What is there to explain? It's already been explained.. MySpace, which has caused hundreds of thousands of crimes, even deaths... Has an approved application in the app store, allowing for those possible "scenarios" to occur.

Though Tweetie, using the Twitter API, which can only use 140 characters or less of text per update is denied.

Tell me what you see that is right about that situation?

This is called the hazards of the internet age. Maybe Apple should remove the Safari App from the iPhone altogether. You never know, someone might come across a dirty joke or see Lindsay Lohan's crotch.

It's interesting that Apple blocks a Twitter app, but there is a very realistic app called iRevolver that lets people play Russian Roulette (you even get to load the bullets and spin the cylinder yourself before possibly blowing your brains out).

To me this is the worst thing the app store has done yet. It has taken a crap on what many consider to be a best in class app. If the app store loses these kind of developers then the app store is reduced to a bunch of fart apps and tip calculators. Every platform is as special as the developers who make apps for it and they should be treated as such.

They should treat it like they do the rest of the iTunes store. If it isn't porn then leave it alone.

Exactly. As for the rest of the iTunes store, what about all the music with profane lyrics - like gansta rap? Shouldn't Apple start pulling music that contains a Parental Advisory warning too? Hypocrits.

Every time I open up the Facebook app, chances are good that I'll see plenty of foul language from friends' recent status updates, and chances are also pretty good that I'll curse like a sailor in my status.

Kinda reminds me of Wal-Mart and it's Holier Than Thou stance on music. They won't allow explicit music, but there are $#@Tloads (pun intended) of R-rated movies available on their shelves. I'm also pretty sure that they sell the Grand Theft Auto series games.

If you as a retailer want to restrict your content, that's your decision. But don't go putting one standard here and another there.

Check out an app called 'zintin' if you want to be offended. Almost all porn. It does have an option to turn off adult content, so maybe that's how thy get away with it.

Perhaps I am missing something, but I do not see what makes Tweetie so much better than TwitterFon to that point that it justifies the $2.99 charge. I would love it if someone could further explain. I don't know anyone who owns Tweetie and I don't really want to waste the $3 if it ends up being almost the same as TwitterFon.
