I have a 2012 Mac Mini that I have sorely neglected on updates until yesterday. Up until yesterday, it was still on Mavericks which is what it shipped with as I used it only as an iTunes server so I didn't care about updates. I finally have it on High Sierra which is running great on it's stock 1TB HDD.

The only app that I can't update is Twitter so I can't participate in polls and other things like I can on the twitter on my 2012 MBP.

I have the MBP backed up in Time Machine just as I have always done with the Mini. Can I somehow restore the twitter app from the MBP onto the Mini? I know I can restore the complete backup from the MBP onto the mini, I frequently did that between a 2015 MBP and the 2013 MBP.

Twitter is getting ready to drop the Mac client, perhaps that is why you can't update it. Maybe try TweetDeck?

I know I can't update it. I'm asking how I can get the copy of Twitter from the MBP onto the Mini.

I am not aware of a way to restore a single app from a backup.

If you simply copy the app bundle (twitter.app) from the /Applications folder on the MBP to /Applications on the Mini, replacing the older bundle, it might do the trick. There are a number of resources (about 14 additional files\folders) associated with the application that are scattered around your file system (most in ~/Library and /var) that likely don't get updated once the app is initially installed. If simply replacing the .app doesn't work, you could gather all of these resource files from the MBP and replace the files on the Mini, but that is not an easy path and will require using Terminal commands like sudo since some of these files and folders are owned by root.

If you use an application delete utility like AppCleaner, it will list all of the resources associated with the app bundle to help you see all to potential files you may need to update to make it clean. But, again, it won't be easy which is why the TweetDeck suggestion since Twitter is abandoning Twitter.app.

Or, Twitter is hoping folks will use browsers going forward, so eventually that may be the only option if they disable the Twitter.app at some point.
