I had been busy copying my photos from a drive on the old MP to the new MP and a Seagate 6TB drive mounted in the other slot on the Pegasus J2i. Just a little bit ago I went to copy the video files to the Toshiba, but I could not access it. Even tried running First Aid on it, but nothing could access it.

I opened up the MP and felt the drive and it was cold, removed the J2i and pulled the Toshiba out and replaced it with another Seagate 6TB drive which it working fine so far.!

annoying, ship back to apple for an immediate replacement. very surprised to see a doa spinner in todays day and age.

Thank you for the information that the Pegasus J2i comes with a Toshiba 7200rpm 3.5" drive. The website is unspecific probably on purpose.

That's a real bummer. Look at the J2i instruction doc and locate the Promise support info, and contact them ASAP. I'd be surprised if they don't send you a new J2i overnight. They may require you to remove your installed J2i and mail it to them rather than mailing them just the 8TB disk. If you have a placed your own 8TB in the 2nd slot they will require you to use the disk vendor's warrant for replacement. Promise will only cover the 8TB disk that is included in the J2i.

Good luck and post back what kind of support Promise provides you please.

BTW... what level of i/o data rates read/write are you seeing with 2Ji's 8TB disk ?

I never got any i/O out the 8TB drive, but I will tell you the date rate through the SATA ports is not that good compared to writing data to the system SSD .

Well i/o to the internal Apple SSD should be awesome in comparison.... what are you talking about! That SSD should be delivering at least 2500 MB/sec for serial reads/writes.

I would expect around 150 to 200 MB/sec for the 2Ji's SATA III 8TB Toshiba for decent serial reads.

So the Toshiba 8 TB was a DOA ?

The Toshiba was not DOA, but it died within the first two days, I will say that the cabling provided by Pegasus is a tight fit, can be done. Apple has a I/O card in slot 1 right next to the SATA ports. I had to pull the I/O card to get the power connector in. We will see how the Seagate does in that slot on the J2i.

I was seeing about 155 - 170 MB/sec on the transfer to the J2i disks.

just chatted with Apple online, now they want to talk to me via phone... So we will see where this goes..

I should also note that that cabling on the J2i is a little short, especially on the power connector.. I plan to talk with them about that too... I had to remove the I/O card to get all the SATA connectors and power into the connections on the motherboard...

Thanks.... keep us posted on what transpires when chatting with Apple. The cable 'tightness' issue sounds like a Promise issue and one would have thought they checked that aspect out as they obviously collaborated with Apple for have the J2i install seamlessly.

Maybe its best to attach the cable ends to the SATA and Power ports first, and then install to J2i and then attached the dangled ends to the disk(s). This maybe avoids having to remove the Apple's I/O card.

If you're referring to Apple's site, then it's possibly just a case of "whatever Promise puts in there". It may change over time.

The R4i does have an explicit drive compatibility list. The Toshiba AV drive is on it. Promise is highly unlikely to be buying different drives for the J2i than they are for the R4i. They have to buy more for the R4i so the J2i is probably going to piggyback off of that disk pool. ( and both of them may be piggybacking off of some other larger volume Promise product. ).

Tried opening a call on the failed Toshiba drive that came with the Promise Pegasus J2i cage. Apple shuffled me through several people and I ultimately got hung up on by a sales person who was supposed to help me get a replacement drive.... Go figure..

I've created an account on Promises site and we will see what they say now...

Those dropped calls with Apple help line can be very annoying especially if you've spent a long time chatting with them. Also give them your phone # for a call back and the Case # ASAP when on the phone with them. That helps if you call back.

Apple has sent me a couple email to rate their quality of support which I rated very poor...

As for the Toshiba 8TB drive, no replacement yet.

The Seagate that I replaced it with it performing great!

I really hate the Magic Mouse, it performs ok at the best and in some cases does not even come close to the performance of other desktop mice...

i hate it too. i was so mad when i forgot to select the black trackpad, instead of the magic mouse.
I called back to see if I can get the black one exclusive to the 7,1. They said i can, I would have to call into applecare (because i forgot to add that too) and i can order it at that time.

I will probably sell the magic mouse, and get the Logitech mx master 3
