Two Factor Authentication for AppleID 4 digits not 6?

I've just set up two factor authentication for my wife's iPhone, and it has nice looking pop-ups with a map showing the location of a sign-on attempt, and a 6 digit verifcation code. My iphone (7 plus) still has the 4 digit codes and no fancy maps... Any idea how to switch to the newer version of 2FA?

I had the same question for a while. Go to appleid.apple.com and disable your two factor authentication. Then re-enable it. It will upgrade to the new version. The Apple Watch auto unlock actually won't work on Macs without using the newer version too.

I just worked this out with a bit of googling too. A bit odd isn't it? Anyway it's working now!

That's two-step verification. You'll need to disable it and set your trusted devices to use two-factor authentication, which sends a code to your device through Apple's servers.

No, it was two factor. It was just the older version.

They are entirely different things, and on the Apple ID page it is listed as separate methods of verification. Two-step is used when you do not have a trusted device, and two-factor is used mainly when you have a trusted device readily accessible to verify your identity. I have multiple accounts and they use either based on the availability of the trusted devices.

Whatever it was was different to both the new style two factor and the current style two step. Anyway it works now so thanks all.

Glad you figured it out. But 4 digit and no map is Two-Step. Been that way for a couple of years now.
