It was the cd that caused the problem, not the imac. I tried putting the same cd in another devise and I got the same problem. The imac is working great.

MY new imacS sucks. I just bought my new 24 inch imac yesterday. I come home, turn it on for the first time and what happens? It froze on me. What a great first impression. I've been a long time pc user and I have never had a pc freeze on me on the first power-up. NOT ONCE. One of my main reason for switching to a mac was because I "heard" that macs have less problems compared to a pc. Well, so far, this is not the case. Moving on.

Today, I returned the heavy peice of paper weight to the apple store where I made the purchase. Got another imac and came home. I was willing to make it work. I'm all about second chances. I turned my second imac on today and what happens? Bliss...Everything worked great. It didn't freeze or anything and the screen was so shiny. I couldn't believe how happy it made me. The fact that the brand new $1800.00 computer turned on without freezing. You know, I never had that with my pc.

My second imac worked fine. Until, I droped a cd in the imac. It is refusing to spit the cd back out. Is this a joke? Why am I going through so much trouble with a brand new computer? A brand new apple nontheless, if this was a pc, I might not even care. But apple is suppose to be better no? I pushed the eject button located on my keyboard. No response. The computer shows that it is busy (I'm guessing with ejecting the cd) with the fruity circular thingy. To make things worse, NOTHING works.

I did some digging and found out if you shut the computer down and turn it back on with the eject button pressed down, the cd pops out (it was easy to find another person with the same problem). i tried it and it worked. my cd is now out of the imac. for the hell of it, i inserted back into the imac. it took the cd in and i was able to eject it without a problem. i tried a third time. its stuck again. i decided to leave it in the imac. i've had enough of this crap. i'm going to sleep on it and see how i feel tomorrow. i dont know if i want to go through with this again. its alot of work carrying the imac around. as of right now, i want a full refund and i want to go back to that familiar pc world i'm so used to. but a small portion of me wants to explore what apple has to offer.

did the previous gen imac have similar issues? i uderstand this is the new imac, but come on, its not like its a completely new model.

Bad luck. Of the 6 Macs we've bought over the last 5 years, each one has worked perfectly out of the box and ever since. Your symptoms sound like the memory was faulty. Apple buy in memory from other companies, so the failure rate due to this component will be no different from the PC industry.

I think you need a little patience! You're jumping into a new OS and sound like you expect to know everything straight away. For a start, are you holding down the eject button? A quick press won't work. Have you tried dragging it to the trash in the dock (it will change to an eject icon)?

And what the hell does 'to make things worse, NOTHING works' mean???

just bad luck dude. I've used macs 16 years..... 7 models i've bought new.... never had any major trouble. none. hardware or software.

just sold a G4 that was 7 yrs old, and worked flawless with no problems, despite doing many upgrades myself. :)

hang in there.... macs are way better than pcs

Is the CD original or blank one?

The first time using my G5 quad I was installing Final Cut Studio....and she froze....

I tried everything, restarting, clearing PRAM, repairing permissions, I even called apple care and no one new why it was freezing when installing....in any case after a few tries it finally worked...

I was pretty bummed that I just spent close to $6,000 on a computer and $1,200 on a program and it was freezing up....

but with a little bit of patience I made it through and haven't have a problem since....other then an occasional "unexpected close" every now and again...

you have to understand that these machines are amazing...but they are not perfect.

that is all

OP has a single post to his name.

I really dont see the point in continuing talking about it since he wont be back.

But if he does, im curious to know about the CD problem. Does it work in another machine besides the iMac?

i should've elaborated.

nothing worked meaning i could not click on anything and the command+option+esc or any keyboard command didn't work.

this was the problem. it was a blank cd and i got the same result when i put the bland cd in my car. the car was able to spit it back out, but i could tell something was wrong because it was making all kinds of abnormal sounds when it was trying to eject the cd.

everything is working properly now and i've tested other cd/dvd and the imac ejects on command.

You actually have to press and hold the eject key for a few seconds for it to eject the disc.

I am a bit curious about this:

...I've been a long time pc user and I have never had a pc freeze on me on the first power-up. NOT ONCE.
...Got another imac and came home. ... Bliss...Everything worked great. It didn't freeze or anything and the screen was so shiny. I couldn't believe how happy it made me. The fact that the brand new $1800.00 computer turned on without freezing. You know, I never had that with my pc.

You seem to be contradicting yourself.

yea, i know you have to push and hold the eject button for a few seconds. it doesn't work.

I never had that experience with a pc meaning, I was never happy that the computer turned on correctly because the thought never crossed my mind. It was a given fact that the computer will turn on correctly the first time.

I'm just happy that my second imac is working properly.

Slot loading drives can be temperamental at times. Hope you have a smoother experience from now on. I bet you are happy to get rid of the PC cable mess.

yea, it actually looks empty without all the cables hehind my desk.
