It used to be possible to have two phones sharing an Apple ID so you can get the same music, app purchases etc., but with each phone having it's own SMS number. Now with iMessage this doesn't seem to be the default behaviour. I believe an iMessage will now show up on both phones. What can I do to set up shared music but independent iMessages?

1. Don't use iMessage, set the phones to only use SMS. - seems a bit of a shame really
2. Set up phones with different Apple IDs - but that means I may have to buy things twice.

Are these the only options or are there other ways to set up the phone to use multiple accounts?

Any ideas?

iMessage and iTunes Store have different logins on the iPhone, so you can use different accounts for each. So you'll have separate logins for iMessage (and iCloud probably) but use the same login for the Store, hence access to the same purchases.

Use same appleID but different email address registered under that appleID.

Thanks swiftaw. I can see them both listed, one under iTunes store settings and one under iMessage settings, but I don't seem to have the option to edit the iMessage one, it seemed to default to the iTunes store one

I think the part you're missing is that you'll need to create a separate iCloud account on one of your phones. My wife and I have the same set up. To do this, I created a new apple ID for her (so she would have her own iMessage/iCloud), signed into iCloud with it, but used my information for iTunes/Store- we can iMessage, share music, and she can buy using my login.

Hope this helps and makes sense. It's definitely a bit confusing.
