Two layers into on video file

Hello, all. I'm trying convert my copy of Bridge On The River Kwai into a file I can watch on my :apple:TV (obviously!) and am having a little trouble.

The disk is a dual layer disk with the two parts of the movie, each about 1 hour 20 minutes in length, on the two layers. The problem is that I can't seem to figure how to get DTOX to combine the two DVD layers into one layer so I can then use Handbrake and encode one 2 hour 40 minute movie.

As near as I can tell what I have to do is use Handbrake to rip the two parts to high quality .mkv or .avi files that contain the DD 5.1 soundtrack, then use VisualHub to convert and join the files to one .mov file. Is this my only choice?

Any suggestions from someone who's done something similar with this DVD would be appreciated.

If you rip (using dtox or anything else) you can "splice" the two pieces together using Visual Hub. I recommend you use VHub for the encoding for any splice job, since splicing together 2 H.264 files requires they be expanded, spliced, then re-encoded. Better to let VHub do the encoding and splicing simultaneously, unless you have 20+ hours you don't know what to do with.
 
I've tried to use VH, but it only converts the first layer, and doesn't see the 2nd layer. It's a bit of a puzzle for me.

That's a good suggestion for getting iTunes to show 2 files as, basically, one file even though there are still two files. But this won't accomplish my goal of combining the two movie files into one that will play seamlessly.

Why wouldn't it play seamlessly using this method? I imagine it would be as seamless as combining the two files with VH...but can someone correct me if I'm wrong here?

Because it just doesn't work that way. :apple:TV still sees the movie as two files and it doesn't play movie files back to back like that.

If I remember correctly, Bridge on the River Kwai is authored with each layer as a separate title. I remember when I watched it, the layer change took forever (5-10 seconds). I thought it had locked up. This might be causing some of the issues.

That seems to be my experience with the disk. I've got the two titles ripped to two .mkv files, constant quality set to 70%, with audio set to AC3 passthrough. I don't have time for it this morning so tonight I'm going to use VisualHub to make one .mov file that will play on :apple:TV.

it worked. I was able to take the two .mkv files and combine them using VisualHub and get a good result. I did lose the chapter markers but that is a small thing. So if anyone else is trying to rip and combine Bridge On The River Kwai this thread is your answer.

So I wasn't completely satisfied with the .mov I had ended up with after the process I describe above so I decided to revisit the issue. And I came up with what I think is a better solution.

Using MacTheRipper 3 r14m I did a Main Feature rip of the 2 layers of Bridge on the River Kwai. Then I used DVD2OneX to combine the VIDEO_TS folders then encoded it using Handbrake.

This is a much better process, I think, which generated a better file.

Anyway, hope this helps someone else.
