Two Mac Minis as Master/Slave?

Hi there. I just bought a new Mini to replace my old one, both on OSX Yosemite. I'd like to make the new one a master and reformat the older one and/or make it simply show up as a second drive for the first. I've Googled around and gotten nowhere with this stuff and am open to any ideas or links anyone may have to make this happen. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could go into the networking page (Preferences?) and setup the 2nd Mac so you can view/control it from the primary Mac. Link to 2 Macs with Cat 5 or 6 cable (depending on how fast of data transmission you need).

That would be great (they're connected now by CAT5 cable), but how do I set that up? Just as a network connection, with all files available on the old mini? Details would be great!

Try under wifi tab, advanced, in Network, "create computer-to-computer networks" to enable. There are further instructions here:

Just wondering if I can do it as a target disk with a CAT5 cable instead of having to get a Firewire cable and a Thunderbolt:Firewire adaptor. Oy.

There's little point in running a Mac full-time in target disk mode. The fans will run full blast and it'll use far more electricity than just putting the old drive in a USB case.

What is it that you're trying to do??

I just want to use the old machine as an external hard drive and perhaps to play music or do other low-intensity functions while I do most of my work on the new machine.

For now, I just have it networked and was considering setting it up for screen sharing so I don't need to have an additional mouse/keyboard/monitor setup. I like your suggestion not to have it in target disk mode.

If the mini is in target mode, it can't do any of its own processing work. As suggested, just run it without a screen or keyboard in normal operating mode.

Wonder if there is a way to combine the CUP to make it work faster. My guess is that its not as simple as what I have in mind. Haha.
