Two minis same router = 20 miles away?

Hi (i posted this in software forum, but not much response)

My Mom just got a new mac mini and we are trying to get share audio and share screen to work.

1. If I take my mac mini to her house, and plug it into her modem/router (it's a modem with four ethernet ports), is this "the same" as if we were communicating via internet miles away? If not, is it still useful for getting the share audio/screen to work?

2. We used to share audio/screen via ichat, now it's via imessage, right?

I'm trying to even figure out what you are asking....

It sounds like you are asking this:
1. You are currently using screen sharing via Messages (on OSX) between your mini's which are located 20 miles apart.
2. If you go to your mother's house and thus aren't in separate locations, can you still use screen sharing via Messages?

While I don't use Screen Sharing via Messages, it shouldn't matter location. All will still call Apple's servers and send out via the internet and come back.

If on the same network, I would really recommend using local Screen Sharing as it should be considerably faster:

No. Screen sharing is still done via "iChat" but iChat has been migrated to the new Messages application. I am assuming you both have an AIM account. That being said, simply open Messages --> Window (Menu Bar) --> Buddies.

She just got a new mac mini, and we both upgraded to Mavericks. Having trouble screen sharing. So, I might carry my mac mini to Mom's and connect it to her router.

So, my question was: is this arrangement "the same" as using the internet in each a different location for the purpose of troubleshooting screen share.

There are two types of screen sharing. There is a local VNC meaning that you must have the Mac connected to the same network as her, which defeats your purpose. There is also global VNC where it will go across the Internet. This is available in Messages by using an AIM account just like in Lion. Remember that gives you control when she screenshares and vice versa.

When a Mac is connected locally, it will appear in the sidebar if screensharing is enabled. It will not if not on the same network. AIM doesn't require the same network, but will work on the same network. So yes... you can use AIM to iChat your mother down stairs.

When screen sharing, one person is sharing the screen. The other user can control the Mac that is being shared. The other person (the one who is sharing) doesn't see your screen.
