easter island
I just bought a Samsung hdtv with a vga port and I cant get it to work on Windows (Mac is works fine), I turned it on by left-clicking on the desktop and it seems to register the screen (Windows knows its Samsung and the mouse disappears when moving to the other screen) but the TV seems to go on standby or switch off (I cant even call up the menu on the TV).

Does anyone know whats going on or how I can fix this? I hate Windows, this kinda thing always happens...:D

Open the Display Properties window (right-click on the desktop, then Properties), go to the Advanced tab, select the second screen and enable "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".

Sounds like the Samsung doesn't like the resolution you're throwing at it. Even high-end TVs are fairly low resolution compared to computer displays.

If you are trying to mirror or clone the built-in display, try reducing the resolution. Windows has to have the same resolution on both screens when in this mode.

If you are using an extended-desktop, which is what it sounds like, go to Control Panels/Displays. You can also reach there by right-clicking on the Windows desktop. Once there, go to the Settings tab. There, you should see a 1 and 2 for the two screens. You can rearrange them to reflect your physical setup. Another key thing is that you can select each screen and modify the resolution for each of them independently. For example, click on the 2 (assuming that is the Samsung) and then modify the resolution slider down to 640x480. If the TV comes to life, then that was your problem. Now you can bump up the resolution to the TV to its native size.

The Mac usually handles display resolutions automatically. Windows does not, in my experience.
