from slashdot and Heise Security:

It seems that SP2 for Windows XP isn't as secure as Microsoft touts it to be. Heise Security has uncovered two flaws in SP2's bolstered security measures, both of which may be used to get around the new trusted/untrusted executable origin checks. Of course, who would be surprised by this?"
"Well it appears that at least one hotfix is already available to fix yet another bug in Windows XP, post SP2 application." Reader Finalnight writes "'Microsoft Corp. yesterday delayed yet again its oft-delayed Windows XP Service Pack 2, this time postponing the patch's distribution through the company's Automatic Update service.'"

Woo boy... who would of thought... Microsoft is the opposite of security

what a bunch of dumb****s. I sure hope that Longhorn is good. Because I think that Apple is going to have a hard time ramping up production to fill the demand for the wave of people that want 'an alternative'.

Well my roommate is already looking to switch to Apple once he pays off his credit card balance and neither one is going to be updating to SP2 for a while because of all these issues. It seems like Microsoft is giving people a pretty compelling argument for switching.

You have to wonder what goes through the minds of corporate customers when they read stuff like this. It's really interesting to me that M$ is still gunning for the enterprise market at all.

OTOH, M$ also seems to be shifting its push to a more diversified home user base where ignorance about security issues reigns supreme. I seriously wonder how many end users at home and in small offices have ever bothered to keep up with M$ releases of patches, updates and service packs. I mean, do you really want to sit through 2-25MB of downloads every month on a 56K modem? It might explain the plethora of M$-based Outlook email viruses that land in my "In" box every day.

*sigh*

It kinda makes me wish Apple won its lawsuit against M$ back in the 80s - imagine a world where Windows couldn't exist. :D

I imagine that there are quite a few institutions now more seriously considering some form of UNIX for critical tasks -- be it OS X, Linux, *BSD, or even Solaris.

I'd go apesh*t if M$ f'd-up my NASCAR 2003! I gotta have my racing.

Microwank can never seem to catch a break in fixing their crap software. It's one step forward, two steps back for those goobers. :D :D :D

surprised? lol. I saw it coming... who couldnt? :p

Not many, and I agree. It has everything to do with the whole Windows architecture. My guess it will NEVER be fixed. And if Longhorn has any vulnerabilities, they will be found from the most serious hacker to script kiddies. Fine. I like my world just the way it is. And next year I am outlawing IE at work (no longer developed for Mac, but still). Safari or Mozilla only. I just wish I didn't HAVE to use Office.
