Whilst helping my mom look at family sharing on an Macbook Air M1 we chanced upon noticing her old iPad Air 2 (used by my brother) was still linked to and signed in to her Apple ID.

It was listed on 'find my devices' etc and showing it's location (in her home, he uses regularly when visiting).

He says he was signed in with his own Apple ID.

Can anybody explain to me how that is possible? I thought an iPad can only be configured to sign in to one Apple ID at a time.

I think it’s possible to sign into certain elements of iOS like the App Store with a different Apple ID than the one used for iCloud. That might be happening here.

I don't get how that works eric.. but if the iPad was still signed in to my moms Apple ID, could the following claims by my brother be true?

* the iPad had been "wiped"
* it no longer provided access to her messages etc

There is more to this...

Did your mum ever actively sign out of the iPad? If not, the answer is... it's unlikely they are true. Wiping the iPad would mean that your mum would need to input her icloud password to remove activation lock before it could be set up and used... so I doubt it had been wiped.

What could be confusing your brother is that perhaps he is signed into the app store/itunes with his own account... while it remains signed in to your mum's Apple ID for iCloud and everything else. That's a strong possibility.

On the find my screen... what does it show as the 'date' the iPad was last seen?

She didn't sign out.

He is very technically able with Macs.

He claimed the iPad was "wiped" and "i no longer have access to her msgs etc"

Apple Support disputed this.

I don't have the date/time but it was displaying geographically on the map despite allegedly having been wiped the day before.

As I said there is more to this....

As she was locked out of her iPad and as my brother was unreachable, we untethered it from her Apple ID and created a new p/w for her Apple ID.

We established the new p/w across all her devices and ensured they are signed in correctly and it was all working fine.

Another thing that was noted whilst doing this (I stumbled across this stuff whilst trying to help her sort out family sharing) is that 'remote desktop login' had been re-enabled. I had disabled it previously for her security.

Mysteriously, last night she could not log in to her Macbook Air M1.

One of my macs shows on the map despite being "Last seen" 5 days ago. There's a chance it would still show up with historical data... but if it said it was seen "Now" that would mean it definitely wasn't wiped. Simply being on the map isn't conclusive.

The situation is a little confusing and since the iPad is in your mum's possession, the problem is also unclear. Have I understood this correctly...

  • Mum had an iPad Air 2 that she no longer uses.
  • Your brother goes to visit often. He begins using that iPad Air 2. With permission to do so?
  • Brother is assumed to have reset the iPad and set it up for himself, no longer having access to Mum's iCloud things.
  • Mum and you notice that this iPad Air is still linked to your mum's apple ID. Problem - you are worried he still has access to Mum's iCloud and message?
  • You try to use the iPad but find it has a passcode or touch id enabled.
  • Mum changed her password for her Apple ID and set up other devices correctly. There was no access to the iPad.
Does the iPad still show in find my now?

Mysteriously, last night she could not log in to her Macbook Air M1.

Was she using her Apple ID for login details? Has she regained access?
