One multitasking feature that I've been waiting for in iOS is the ability to have multiple windows/instances of the same app open. Is there any indication that this will be possible in iOS 11, with new APIs for developers?

I'm specifically interested in having two instances of the same app side-by-side on the screen, but with iOS 11's "App Spaces," another scenario could be having one window in one space, and another window of the same app in another space.

Sort of, but not really. If you drag an open already open "full screen" into another in slide-over you can use it and that's ok. When you return to multitasking the slide over isn't preserved in the space. That's true of slide over multi-tasking in iOS 11 anyway. If the app is already open in the multi-tasking view then it remains as it was, fullscreen, and if it wasn't already open then it's not visible at all.

If make an app split-view that was already open then it disappears as an independent fullscreen app in multitasking and remains in the split view space.

OK, so you can Slide Over an app temporarily onto one screen while it's open on another screen; but if you try to go into Split View, the app will disappear from the other screen... that's disappointing. I wonder (hopefully) if it could vary by app, and a developer could specify whether simultaneous windows are supported? What app(s) did you try?

Can you Slide Over an app on top of itself? :) (I'm guessing probably not.)

You can’t slide an app on itself, no.
