Typing Getting Easier

After 3 days using my ipad, I've found I'm slowly getting better at using the on-screen keyboard. I almost exclusively use it in landscape mode, and as long as I position my arms and hands at a comfortable angle, I can type fairly quickly. I currently don't have a case that can prop it up at an angle(like the apple case) and think that would make it even easier to use.

The main problem I see with typing it using apostrophes and numbers, because you have switch to the second screen. I wish Apple could fit at least the apostrophe onto the first keyboard screen somehow, since its used quite alot when one types.

I think though, if I keep using the ipad, I will eventually get as good at typing on its on-screen keyboard as I am on a physical keyboard. It's not as horrible as some people make it out to be, and I think it just has a learning curve.

For a lot of the common apostrophe cases (e.g. "I'm" and "you're") I think it will autocorrect if you just type "im" or "youre".

That might not be a good habit to get into though.

This sounds crazy, but I find that when I use the iPad in landscape mode, I type FASTER than on a regular keyboard. This is a combination of the smaller width keyboard and the on-the-fly spelling correction. I find that I actually look forward to typing in landscape mode.

Portrait mode typing... not so much.

I can type just as fast as a regular keyboard. In fact I am doing so now.

I find typing on this to be super easy and just as fast as a regular keyboard. While I am not the fastest I can certainly do it with ease and have zero frustration when typing on it.

Me too. This gets easier and easier. I'm not quite as fast as on my laptop yet, but I think the slight decrease in speed actually prevents a lot of typos I normally make just flying across the keyboard.

I'm typing pretty quickly but also making errors. I assume it will get better in time.

Also, should be interesting going from hardware to software keyboards and training myself not to rely on certain auto correct mechanisms and some key placements.

I really like it, I wish the numbers were the first row of the keyboard. I don't feel like I should have to click the "123" Key to access the numbers on the iPad.

Stupid Confession

I'm just now figuring out, after owning my iPad a couple of days, that typing in landscape mode makes the keyboard larger LOL
Now I don't think I'll need to buy a keyboard. I'm a touch typist and this works just fine for me


Aaaargh! Just experienced the unintentional "undo" key press. It wiped out all of my text. Good thing I'm a master typist LOL

That's great and not uncommon. I manage smartphones and every new one that comes in I think "How can anyone type on this!", but after a few days the muscle memory is developed and life is good. I think it is more about a change than the device itself (in most cases).

I cam type perfectly fine on the iPad. I am also doing so right now as well. I like how the shift keys have to be held down like on a "real" keyboard.

Typing on this thing is definitely not very hard at all. I honestly like typing on this better than on a real keyboard. Does anyone else still have the keyboard clicks on? I do and find that it helps with not having to look at the keyboard itself.

Really? The keys are completely different spaces, it gets confusing!

One of the best surprises had to be the iPad keyboard.

It was WAY better than I expected and will more than do what little typing that I need.

Lets just get the 3G unit delivered as I want it now!

yes, I can see that IT'S a problem for you ;-)

Just joking... in most cases, as mentioned below, the auto-correct will add the apostrophes in the appropriate places.

I wish they had added more functionality to shift for different characters. With the iPhone, the keyboard is so small you can't easily press both the shift key and a letter at the same time to get a temporary shift, but with the iPad, you can (just like in a conventional keyboard). So, I think they should make the number keyboard with traditional shifts... like having the # above the 3, and the & same as a "shift-7", etc...
