I'm teetering on the edge of getting an iPad to replace my big, clunky, aging PowerBook. I currently use it on the couch and in bed mainly for checking websites, but also quite a bit of IMing with my girlfriend.

I know the iPad will easily work with my couch typing as I can easily rest it on my legs or a nearby table for any lengthy IMing with friends, but more specifically, what about typing while in bed? Do any of you guys run into problems here? Is it a slow and awkward affair trying to type in bed, or does the iPad surprise you? Is it impossible to, say lay back in bed and type on it, or does it absolutely require you sit up and rest it on your legs?

Be honest please! I'm not looking to be pushed into an iPad if it comes at the expense of dramatically slowed typing speeds, or I'd just go for a whole new macbook. :)

Completely supine is hard. Proped against my raised legs okay. Or holding on chest fingers on top of iPad and using thumbs to type. Not as fast. But let's get realistic, better than any alternative, except maybe Dragon Dictation.

its not the best, but it all depends on how you are laying. i would imagine that the apple case (and others like it) would make typing easier. but as long as you're not typing for long stretches at a time i'd imagine it'd work just fine for you.

It's a personal thing. Personally I'm fine typing in bed but I can imagine a lot of other people won't be. It can vary depending on how you choose to lie, just how comfortable you wish to be etc.

I can.* I just lay back with my head on a pillow, a pillow on my tummy, and the iPad in landscape mode in the apple case standing on the pillow. Typing is fine. Especially since the apple case works as a stand that kind of nestles into the pillow for stability.

*typed while lying in bed.
