Contactless payment limits in the uk have now been increased to £30.

Obviously stores that have no limit with Apple Pay are still limitless but touching your card will be limited to £30.

Is that a hard limit? There's a soft limit of $80 (£33) here, at which point it'll prompt for your PIN.

In my experience so far there's no option on the card reader to pay by contactless if it's above the limit.
It sounds like the contactless reader is a separate device then? I saw that a lot in Australia but haven't seen it here; the contactless reader is always integrated into the stripe*/chip reader (which has its own number pad for entering PIN). I find these sorts of regional variations interesting :)

*Yes, we still have them, and yes, they support PIN.

No, the contactless reader is also built into the chip & PIN reader just like you've got. When the bill is below £20 (£30 from today) there is a contactless option on the screen of the reader but it just asks you to insert your card if the payment is higher.

Seems as though 9to5mac and Cult of Mac are picking up on this. - I wrote something similar in the Apple Subreddit earlier today.

Remember, anywhere that has an Apple Pay symbol [Pay logo] (rather than just a contactless “)))” symbol) there is NO limit, because your fingerprint is used in place of your PIN.
(This isn’t new, but I thought it was worth reminding British users because some aren’t aware of it.)

That isn't true, Morrisons and Lidl have Apple Pay stickers on their tills and still have the limit and I'm sure other readers will confirm that also applies to other retailers.

What shops have you managed to make payments over the limit?

A family relative of mine has been given their Apple Pay decals recently, but they haven't got their issuer authorisation from the bank just yet (restaurant). So I suppose we should be careful with this information.

But, first hand - I've shopped at Pret-a-Manger in London on my travels for me and a few friends (I think it came to around £28, and this was in August).
I've also had a Nando's or two for me and my parter, and it always comes over £20 (in July and August).. never had a problem.

^^ Those two retailers are official partners of Apple Pay.

Yes, I've heard some stores have already got rid of the limit and others are working to remove it but to say that there is no limit "anywhere that has an Apple Pay symbol" is misleading and not helpful.

I believe the contactless card transaction process has the ability to reply back to say pin needed (or other secondary form of authentication) so what you mention could happen. Apparently they do it at random too even for low value. However normally as was mentioned above the till normally won't offer the contactless option if > the limit..

Apple pay can go over the limit if the retailer agrees.. let's hope more do it!

Sorry, I suppose it was. That's why I referred to the official partners as my examples. Sorry about that.

The underlining gripe I have with this entire movement though, is that the articles themselves are confusing. Across all websites.
MR, CoM, 9to5 and especially the Daily Mail all confuse consumers with what/where/how much Apple Pay is and isn't restricted. When we of course, all know, that this isn't true.

I'm not all that bothered about the £30 contactless raise. Only really use my contactless bank card every now and again. I do use Apple Pay pretty much every day. Would like to see Lloyds enable Apple Pay and lose the contactless limits.

you'd think nando's would update their website if that was the case

I’ve got Apple Pay! Can I use it in your restaurants?

You can! We’ve just rolled out Apple Pay across all of our restaurants.

To use Apple Pay, just tap your iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch over the screen of the PDQ and use TouchID (the fingerprint sensor) to authenticate the transaction. It’s as simple as that!

You’ll see the Apple Pay sign in the windows of our all restaurants, letting everyone know we now accept this form of payment (we’re pretty excited about it).

At the moment, the limit for using Apple Pay is £20, but we’re looking into extending that to £30 in the next few months. For more information about Apple Pay, including exactly how it works, have a look

unless it isn't true they accept it wih no limit everywhere, yet.

i wanted to use apple pay at the start of august but after seeing this on their website while queueing had to fish my card out, waking up my daughter in the process :(
