U.S. National Security Agency chief loves his Apple iPad, calls it ‘wonderful’

"In a congressional hearing [yesterday], Apple's wonder-tablet received the very unofficial endorsement of the country's top security geek," Andy Greenberg reports for Forbes.

"The hearing was aimed at determining whether the head of the National Security Agency, Lieutenant General Keith Alexander, will lead the U.S. Cyber Command, and produced few surprises," Greenberg reports. "He mentioned, with no prompting, that he owns an iPad, and with very little prompting, that it is 'wonderful.'"

Greenberg reports, "'I am a technologist. I love computers. I have a new iPad,' Alexander told the committee of Senators..."
 
The last person you want in charge of the NSA is some manager type who thinks that owning an iPad makes him a "technologist".

Great. Such qualifications let him compete for the job against ten year olds and eighty year olds who also own an iPad.

Now, if he had at least said that he had jailbroken his iPhone and knew how to hack its settings, then...

As a matter of fact, when the Lieutenant General brought up that he had an iPad, national security took a slight sideline when a congressman returned to the subject of the iPad moments later. According to the actual Congressional Record:


Congressman: I'm tempted to get a critical review of the iPad, but perhaps we can do that--

Director of the NSA: [It's] Wonderful.

Congressman: "Wonderful." I will put that on -- for the record.

I'm sure that the US government employees love their iPads, but do they really need them?
While the iPad is a great piece of technology, it also is a nice to have piece of technology. I would like to see a study on how it is making people more productive. Sure everyone likes using it and it is very convenient to whip out and have boot up in an extremely short period of time, but can it do more than a notebook?
With the greatest economic crisis in the history of the country lurking on the horizon I am glad to see that the US government is spending money that they have borrowed from abroad on hi-tech gadgets that are unnecessary for them to have.

I don't think it's got Gov't that bought one but rather he bought one for himself.

I could find a sports figure like a Kobe Bryant sports figure or a [insert your personal political views fave person's name here] political figure, or a Jeff Bridges celeb who uses a Zune HD and post it here on the heels of a launch.

How do you think that would go over here??? :cool: :confused:

What a hyperbole non-story. Oh, but I guess is the part where all fanboys gang up and get a genuine part-time Apple (products) users and get them banned for merely question a negative aspect of an Apple product.

I'm screen capping the hell out of this post to rub his disgustingly hypocritical nose in this next time he spouts off about a nonsensical fluff story posted here that doesn't have the magical fruit logo on it..

So don't bother trying to get it pulled by brown-nosing the mods here; it's too late (and I mean the brown-nosing, too). :)

Would care elaborating on why isn't this news, when one of the top us officials endorses a brand new product? :rolleyes: Is it non news and "who cares" because you say so? Apparently it is.


In other news, we should all be pretty aware by now that we are all tracked ad nauseam by the nsa, we can be assured of that. :D

What garbage, a top US official announced at will he is using one of the most innovative devices to hit the market recently (and one of apple's biggest bets) that apparently no one yet has had the guts, r&d, or foresight to produce. And, in a typical act of projection, you come here and blame the "fanboys", in your rambling, incoherent and bitter post. And wtf are you doing here if you think people are going to "gang up" and "ban" you over your opinion because of some cultish affiliation to apple? Are you on a masochistic streak?

But of course it's perfectly fine to get in the ipad forums stories about ms vapourware, yes the courier, about to be announced, or promo videos of that other as yet vapourware the hp slate, but as soon as someone posts a genuine, legit story about the ipad and it's adoption, all of a sudden all hell breaks loose with snide comments, "who cares" and the like. Well the title of the thread describes the story succinctly, ignore it if you don't feel it adds something, but no, that's not enough, you have to come in and start the usual mockery about fanboy-ism. But like I 've said before it's not your fault really, it's the moderators who repeatedly allow trolish behaviour from the pc side in these forums.

And btw, please find ANY person of ANY reknown that used the damn Zune a few weeks after its launch. I mean since you mentioned this it must be so easy to find, go on then, don't just trash talk, prove your point. Who is it? We are waiting to hear!
 
Of course he likes it... It doesn't have a camera. Which would block it from use inside the NSA!

And whomever paid for it, our gov't should absolutely have at least one to determine if it can be used to make our intelligence gathering/sharing better, don't you think? Remember how the FBI and CIA didn't share key info? Don't we want them to have the latest tech?
 
Isn't "technologist" just one of these new buzz words IT managers like to call themselves, like a toilet cleaner's job title being "sanitation executive"...
 
Well, I started this page as a bit of a joke. We're only a few months into this crazy Social experiment called Zune, and celebrity sightings are few and far between.

Plus, that rich-and-famous jetset can be oh-so fashion-conscious, and are surely more likely to gravitate to all that hipness that is iPod. (Did I just reveal my un-hipness by saying "hipness"..? Oh, well.)

This page, then, will salute those courageous and individualistic celebs that, defying all peer pressure, choose to choose Zune.

From the link you posted, besides that none of them, endorsed it or used it within the first weeks of release, not to mention that the page contains 6-7 people out of which one is Pam Andersons sex tape pal, and the other is Bill Gates...

Next month, Microsoft is sponsoring a Family Guy television special in which instead of traditional advertising, pitches for Windows 7 will be woven directly into the show itself. I've seen a short preview, and it commits the worst cardinal sin of comedy: It's just not funny. I've got the preview in my blog.

Update: After seeing a taping of the show, Microsoft canceled its sponsorship, saying "the content was not a fit with the Windows brand.

I would say he's a geek

In addition to his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy, Alexander has an M.S.B.A. from the Boston University Graduate School of Management and dual Master of Science degrees in systems technology (electronic warfare) and physics from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also holds a Master of Science degree in national security from the National Defense University.
