name game is ABCDEFG....

Feisty Fawn will be released tomorrow, the introduction of 7.10 sounds like Gibbon will be more restricted in using non-open source material than 7.04, if this is the case, 7.04 will be at least a more feature rich distro than any other major Linux distros in the market for a year.

The Gibbon won the G-race to be our engineering mascot for this next
release, but it was a close run. We very much wanted to honour the
tremendous contributions of the GNU project to Free Software by awarding
the role to the Glossy Gnu. This prompted an intense internal debate
about trademarks, at which both the Fiery Fox and the Icy Weasel were
heard. In the end, however, the judge, jury and elocutionary (that would
be me) took a liking to the Gibbon's extraordinary reach, and the Gibbon
won outright.

The Glossy Gnu will nonetheless play a role in this next release,
because Ubuntu 7.10 will feature a new flavour - as yet unnamed - which
takes an ultra-orthodox view of licensing: no firmware, drivers,
imagery, sounds, applications, or other content which do not include
full source materials and come with full rights of modification,
remixing and redistribution. There should be no more conservative home,
for those who demand a super-strict interpretation of the "free" in free
software. This work will be done in collaboration with the folks behind
Gnewsense.

Update:

Officially website now provide free CD offering as always.

as usual, Ubuntu CDs (LiveCD+Installation hybrid disk, try with LiveCD w/o affecting original system, install from inside the desktop, nice and easy) are free to request, u can request it from here:
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

for ppl who like KDE rather than Gnome (maybe because you know apple's safari is based on KDE's default web browser-Konqueror :D ), u can request Kubuntu free CD from here:
https://shipit.kubuntu.org/

Tnx 4 the heads up.

I have played around with YDL in the past, and enjoyed fiddling around with it.
I have tried Ubuntu on my Cube a few years ago, but lost interest in Linux distro's when Mac OS X 10 matured.
But, for sheer fun I will give this newer Ubuntu release a try, as I am anxious to know what it looks like nowadays, and how user-friendly it has become I assume. :)

I don't know (but I will post back once I know in several hours) if Ubuntu still provids PPC version of 7.04. Since Apple is switching to intel chip, there is few space for linux distros to consider for ppc.

However, you might be able to download it directly from website, the *.iso should be up very soon, so if u want, u can go check at:

The way I read it is that the "more" open source version of 7.10 will be developed in addition to the normal one. So you'll have the standard one with proprietary drivers/apps/etc. and another one with only open source drivers/etc.

Looks like it will be based on gNewSense, which is a version of Ubuntu with all the non-free stuff ripped out.

Ubuntu 7 is Intel only, but for those who are interested Debian 4.0 (on which Ubuntu is based) supports PowerPC models.

has anyone been able to download the release version? Seems they are not updating it and loads of people trying to download it is making the site slow to navigate.

Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Beta: For Mac PowerPC (PPC) -- Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.
Interesting. Did Canonical change their mind regarding PowerPC support, or is this the unofficial project's first release? What kernel is it based on (would check myself if Ubuntu site wasn't so bogged down)?

I downloaded the i386 version and have had no luck what so ever getting it to work via 'Parallels' or even nativly on my macbookpro.

Mmm kinda seems messed up compared to 6.04 & 6.10

Yep it's certainly looking that way. Cant get it to work on my macpro either - with or without parallels.

Well there goes my experimentation.

Edit... well not quite ;)

So I tried on a macbook. Still doesnt work with parallels, but Live CD at least does boot up on a macbook.

After all my trying I finally got to play around - and have one question

Why the generational jump ? (ie. 6.10 to 7.04) because this feels like 6.11 to me - albeit a less compatible version at that. :(

Ubuntu releases distro twice a year, the version number is according to the date of release
7.04=> April, 2007
next version will be 7.10, which is in Oct. 07
6.10 was released last Oct.

It won't work via Parallels. There have been changes between the Alpha in which virtual drives aren't supported.

You can learn some more about it here and here.
