I am in the process of replacing (or upgrading) an Ubuntu headless server I have at home. It's a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with 2GB of RAM, upgradable to 4GB I think. I know it's not the fastest thing on the Universe but I run VirtualBox headless, setup Samba for iTunes and works pretty well so far.
Just recently got rid of TV Cable and started using Roku. I would like to use PlayOn service but it runs on Windows only. The other machine I have is not powerful enough and the Ubuntu server can't handle either; PlayOn needs around 1000 Passmark to run decently.
Should I buy a used PC, Server and install Ubuntu on it? I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on new hardware. I just saw the new Mac mini and I know runs Mac Os, which is not Windows so I can probably install VirtualBox or Parallels.
Can anyone give me some advice? Does anyone know of any cheap server under $600.00 that meets the 1000 Passmark for PlayOn ? Or should I go for the Mac mini which is around 500 dollars.
The reason why I would like the Mac mini, is because the form factor, plus will not run or use Windows as native system. I know PlayOn needs Windows, but the idea is create a virtual machine for that purpose instead.
By the way, thinking in previous Mac Mini, like Apple Mac Mini MC438LL/A Server, basically because a better price.
